Chapter 9 - Her Father's File.

Vivian Bennett stood so quickly that her chair scraped the floor.
"That is impossible."
Sabrina did not argue.
She simply pointed to the footer code.
The first two digits identified the legal department.
The next two marked the year.
The final numbers identified a document series used during a restructuring proposal created five years earlier.
Claire remembered almost nothing about it.
Her father, Thomas Bennett, had still been alive then.
He had suffered a heart attack the following year and never returned to the company.
Naomi searched the archived legal database.
The document number belonged to a draft emergency voting proxy.
It had been designed to preserve company continuity if a major shareholder became temporarily unable to participate.
Thomas had rejected it.
"Why?" Claire asked.
Naomi opened the archived note.
Her father's comment appeared in plain text.
Too much authority in one person's hands.
Do not use.
Claire read the sentence twice.
Someone had taken a rejected legal template and inserted it into her wedding documents.
Only a person with access to old corporate files would have known it existed.
Grant had that access.
Vivian sank back into her chair.
"Your father trusted him."
Claire looked at her mother.
"So did we."
At 5:00 a.m., dawn began to lighten the city outside the windows.
The first wedding staff were arriving downstairs.
Claire's phone filled with cheerful messages from bridesmaids who had no idea the wedding was collapsing above them.
One wrote that she was bringing coffee.
Another sent a photograph of the sunrise.
Claire stared at the normal messages and almost envied the people who had sent them.
Then Ethan knocked on the bridal suite door.
Not called.
Knocked.
Marcus checked the camera.
Ethan stood alone in the hallway, fully dressed now in dark pants and a fresh white shirt.
His tie was gone.
"Claire, please."
Vivian moved toward the door.
Claire stopped her.
"I'll talk to him."
Naomi objected.
Claire agreed to keep Marcus inside the room and Daniel in the corridor.
Then she opened the door but did not invite Ethan in.
He looked exhausted.
For the first time all night, he did not try to smile.
"Grant is using both of us."
Claire said nothing.
Ethan glanced behind her and saw Naomi.
"Of course she's here."
"You have five minutes."
He lowered his voice.
"Grant approached me before I met you."
Claire's chest tightened, but her face did not change.
"I know."
That startled him.
Ethan recovered quickly.
"He told me the company was going to tear your family apart."
"And you decided to help?"
"I decided to get close enough to understand what he was talking about."
Claire almost laughed.
"By dating me?"
"It wasn't supposed to become real."
Those words landed between them.
Ethan closed his eyes.
"That came out wrong."
"No."
Claire's voice remained calm.
"For once, I think it came out exactly right."
He insisted he had fallen in love with her after meeting her.
He claimed Grant later pressured him to continue helping with company information.
"Why not tell me?"
"Because by then I had already done things you would never forgive."
Claire lifted the black folder.
"Like the payment?"
Ethan's eyes moved to it.
"I never received that money."
"It's in a company with your name."
"Grant controls the account."
Claire remembered Zurich.
"And the international account?"
Ethan went completely still.
She had finally found the one fact he did not expect her to know.
He whispered, "Noah."
Claire closed the door in his face.
May you like
Before the latch clicked, Ethan said one last thing.
"If you think Grant is the only person lying to you, ask your mother why your father really rejected that proxy."
