Chapter 12 - The Hearing.
The courtroom was smaller than Claire expected.
That made Eleanor's presence feel larger.
She sat behind Nathan Cole in a dark burgundy suit, silver hair pinned perfectly, hands folded as if attending a board meeting.
Adam sat alone on the opposite bench.
He looked older than he had four days earlier.
Claire did not sit beside him.
Leah had warned her that the first hearing would not decide everything.
It would decide where Sophie stayed while the court sorted through everything else.
For Claire, that was everything.
Nathan began with the birthday video.
The court watched Claire demand that Adam speak.
They watched him try to de-escalate.
They watched Claire slap him.
The camera angle did not show Eleanor's grip on Sophie's wrist.
It did not show the shattered bowl clearly.
It did not show the weeks before that moment.
Nathan paused the video on Claire's face.
"This is the person asking the court to believe everyone else is the danger."
Claire wanted to stand up.
She did not.
Leah squeezed her pen once, their agreed signal to remain still.
When Claire testified, Leah did not hide the slap.
"Did you strike your husband?"
"Yes."
"Was that acceptable?"
"No."
"Do you blame Eleanor Whitmore for your decision to strike him?"
Claire looked at the judge.
"No."
Eleanor's expression shifted slightly.
Claire continued.
"I was furious because my husband would not protect our daughter."
"But the slap was my action."
"I regret it."
The admission gave Nathan less room than he expected.
Then Leah played the nursery clip.
The courtroom heard Eleanor make Sophie repeat that Mommy scared her.
They heard Adam object.
They heard Eleanor tell him to sign papers if he wanted the filming to stop.
Nathan called it an isolated misunderstanding.
Leah introduced the full recording from the stuffed rabbit.
Nathan objected.
The judge allowed limited playback pending authentication.
Eleanor's voice filled the room.
"A judge only needs to believe the child is safer elsewhere for thirty days."
The judge looked directly at her.
For the first time, Eleanor stopped smiling.
Then came the trust documents.
Leah explained the 4.8 percent voting block.
She showed that Eleanor's custody petition was filed before the birthday confrontation.
She showed that Nathan entered Eleanor's house during the time Sophie was filmed in the red room.
Nathan objected again.
This time the judge's patience thinned.
"Counsel, were you present during a recorded interview of the child?"
Nathan stood.
"I was present in the home."
"That was not my question."
The room went silent.
Nathan asked for advice-of-counsel privilege and a recess.
The judge denied the request for immediate placement with Eleanor.
Sophie would remain with Claire.
Eleanor would have no unsupervised contact pending forensic review and a child-specialist evaluation.
Claire nearly collapsed with relief.
But the order also required Claire to participate in anger-management counseling because of the slap.
She accepted without argument.
Adam's contact with Sophie would remain supervised until the court understood his role in the coaching.
He lowered his head.
Outside the courtroom, reporters had already gathered because of the Whitmore name.
Claire shielded Sophie from cameras and moved toward the side exit.
Eleanor caught up only far enough to speak without violating the new order.
"Enjoy your little victory."
Claire kept walking.
Eleanor's voice followed her.
"By Friday, the company will be gone."
Claire stopped.
Adam appeared from the hallway.
"What does that mean?"
Eleanor looked at him with open contempt.
"The lenders meet tomorrow morning."
Adam went pale.
"You moved it up."
Eleanor smiled.
"No."
"I prepared."
Then Adam's phone rang.
He looked at the screen and answered.
Within seconds, all color left his face.
"The board called an emergency vote."
Claire stared at him.
"When?"
Adam swallowed.
"Nine tomorrow morning."

He looked toward Eleanor.
"And Mom already submitted Sophie's proxy."
