Chapter 2 - The Door That Stayed Open.

Claire drove for twenty minutes before realizing she had no destination.

Sophie sat buckled into the back seat, still wearing her pale pink cardigan, holding both hands against her chest as if protecting herself from another sudden noise.

Every few minutes, Claire checked the mirror.

"You okay, baby?"

Sophie nodded automatically.

That automatic nod hurt more than tears would have.

Claire pulled into a small hotel near the interstate and booked a room under her maiden name.

She did not call Adam.

She did not call Eleanor.

She did not call anyone until Sophie was in clean pajamas, sitting cross-legged on the bed with a cartoon playing quietly.

Then Claire photographed the red mark on Sophie's wrist.

She took six pictures from different angles.

She hated herself for thinking like evidence mattered more than comfort.

But Eleanor's final words kept repeating in her head.

Tomorrow, Sophie may not be leaving with you.

Claire called her college friend Leah Bennett, now a family-law attorney.

Leah answered on the third ring.

"Claire?"

Claire tried to speak calmly.

She failed.

Ten minutes later, Leah was silent on the other end of the call.

"You slapped Adam in front of witnesses?"

"Yes."

"Did anyone record it?"

Claire looked at the birthday room in her memory.

Phones had been everywhere.

"Probably."

Leah exhaled.

"Then assume Eleanor has the video already."

Claire sat beside Sophie.

"Can she take my daughter because I slapped my husband once?"

"Not by herself."

"That is not what I asked."

"She can file something."

Claire closed her eyes.

"How fast?"

"If she was already prepared, very fast."

The phrase already prepared made Claire's stomach tighten.

Leah asked her to document everything that had happened at the dinner.

Claire began typing notes into her phone.

She wrote about the shattered crystal bowl.

She wrote about Sophie's wrist.

She wrote about Adam looking away.

Then Sophie spoke from beside her.

"Mommy?"

Claire put the phone down.

"Yeah, sweetheart?"

Sophie stared at the television without watching it.

"Is the judge coming?"

Claire felt the room tilt.

"What judge?"

Sophie touched the hem of her pajama shirt.

"Grandma's judge."

Claire turned off the television.

"What did Grandma say about a judge?"

Sophie became very still.

Claire immediately softened her voice.

"You're not in trouble."

Sophie looked at her.

"Grandma said if I cry too much, the judge knows Mommy makes me sad."

Claire could hear Leah through the phone.

"Claire, don't ask leading questions."

Claire swallowed.

"Did Grandma say anything else?"

Sophie nodded.

"She said I have to practice."

Claire stopped breathing for a second.

"Practice what?"

Sophie whispered the answer.

"Saying you scare me."

Leah's voice changed instantly.

"Write down the exact words."

Claire did.

Her hands shook so badly that she mistyped the sentence twice.

Then someone knocked on the hotel door.

Three hard knocks.

Claire looked at the clock.

10:47 p.m.

Sophie flinched.

"Grandma?"

Claire stood slowly.

"Stay on the bed."

She walked to the door and looked through the peephole.

A man in a gray suit stood in the hallway holding a large envelope.

"Claire Whitmore?"

She did not answer.

"I have legal documents for Claire Whitmore."

Leah heard him through the phone.

"Do not panic."

Claire almost laughed.

The man slid the envelope beneath the door.

It stopped against Claire's bare foot.

She stared at her name printed across the front.

EMERGENCY PETITION FOR TEMPORARY CUSTODY.

Claire crouched and opened it.

The filing time was printed on the first page.

6:12 p.m.

The birthday dinner had not begun until seven.

Claire read the time again.

Eleanor had filed to take Sophie before the bowl was broken.

Before Claire slapped Adam.

Before there had been anything to use against her.

May you like

The trap had not closed at dinner.

It had been built before Claire ever entered the room.
