Chapter 13 - The Recording.

At 8:12 the next morning, Marcus called.
The SD card from the library contained video.
Not much.
Twenty-three minutes.
But the date was Eleanor's birthday.
Claire, Leah, and Adam watched the recovered file in a conference room three blocks from Whitmore Development headquarters.
The camera angle came from Thomas Whitmore's old backup recorder.
It showed the library doorway and part of the dining room beyond it.
At 6:51 p.m., Eleanor entered with Nathan Cole.
They were alone.
Nathan placed a folder on the desk.
"The petition is filed."
Eleanor poured herself a drink.
"Good."
"If Claire stays calm tonight, the filing looks premature."
"She won't stay calm."
"You sound very sure."
Eleanor smiled.
"I know what happens when a mother watches someone frighten her child."
Claire's hands went cold.
Nathan lowered his voice.
"Do not create an injury."
"I do not need an injury."
"I need a reaction."
The video skipped forward.
At 7:18, Adam entered.
He looked furious.
"I'm not doing this."
Eleanor did not turn around.
"You already did."
"I signed an affidavit about Claire losing her temper."
"I did not agree to terrorize Sophie."
"Such an ugly word."
Adam stepped closer.
"Call off the petition."
Eleanor finally faced him.
"Sign the proxy."
"No."
"Then sit at dinner and keep your mouth shut."
Adam stared at her.
"If you touch Sophie, I walk."
Eleanor's expression did not change.
"You said that last Sunday."
Adam flinched.
"And then I reminded you what eight hundred pink slips look like."
Claire looked at him across the conference table.
Adam could not meet her eyes.
The recording continued.
Eleanor stepped toward him.
"Claire thinks your silence is weakness."
"Tonight, let her."
"When she erupts, we will have what we need."
Adam whispered, "You're sick."
Eleanor answered without emotion.
"I'm keeping this family alive."
At 7:39, the dining room confrontation began in the background.
The camera did not capture everything.
But it captured enough.
Sophie spilled punch.
Eleanor grabbed her wrist.
Sophie cried.
Claire entered.
Eleanor lifted the crystal bowl and smashed it deliberately.
Then she pointed at Sophie.
"Look what you've done."
The entire room was silent.
Claire watched herself approach.
She watched Adam stare down at the table.
She watched herself demand that he speak.
Then came the slap.
The video made no excuse for it.
But it also showed what Eleanor's edited phone clip had hidden.
The trap.
The grip on Sophie's wrist.
The deliberate smash.
The smile on Eleanor's face afterward.
The final minute changed everything.
After Claire left with Sophie, Nathan walked into frame.
"You got your incident."
Eleanor lifted her champagne glass.
"Of course I did."
"Adam may turn on you."
Eleanor looked toward the doorway where her son had disappeared.
"Adam turns wherever the pressure is strongest."
The video ended.
No one spoke.
Leah finally stood.
"We go to the board."
Adam shook his head.
"The vote starts in thirty minutes."
"Then we move fast."
At 8:57, they entered Whitmore Development's executive floor.
Eleanor was already inside the boardroom.
Twelve directors sat around the glass table.
A large screen displayed the proposed proxy count.
Eleanor held a majority by less than one percent.
Sophie's 4.8 percent block sat under her name.
Claire walked through the doors with Leah.
Every head turned.
Eleanor's face hardened.
"This is a corporate meeting."
Claire placed the court order on the table.
"Then you should probably stop using my three-year-old as a voting instrument."
The general counsel read the order.
Then he read the trust clause.
Then he looked at Eleanor.
"The proxy is disputed."
Eleanor stood.
"It is valid."
A director asked the question she did not want to hear.
"Did you obtain it through a custody action you filed before the birthday incident?"
Eleanor looked toward Adam.
That was the moment he finally chose a side.
May you like
He connected the recovered SD card to the boardroom screen.
"Watch the recording."
