Chapter 6 - The Petition.

At eleven the next morning, Leah received notice that Eleanor's attorneys had requested an emergency hearing.
The hearing was scheduled for forty-eight hours later.
Claire read the email three times.
Forty-eight hours to prove that a seventy-year-old woman with money, witnesses, lawyers, and a carefully edited story should not be allowed to take her child.
Leah refused to let her spiral.
"We have the nursery clip."
"One clip."
"One very important clip."
"And they have video of me hitting Adam."
Leah did not soften the truth.
"Yes."
Claire looked down.
"I shouldn't have done it."
"No."
The answer surprised her.
Leah continued.
"Do not minimize it, and do not justify it."
"I wasn't going to."
"Good, because Eleanor's whole strategy depends on forcing you to defend the indefensible instead of explaining the larger pattern."
Claire nodded slowly.
That afternoon, a courier delivered a second envelope to Leah's office.
Inside was a printed photograph from the birthday dinner.
Claire's hand was frozen in midair against Adam's face.
Sophie's crying face appeared in the background.
Beneath the photograph was a handwritten note.
COME HOME TONIGHT WITH SOPHIE AND THIS ENDS QUIETLY.
Claire read it twice.
Leah took the page with gloved fingers and placed it in a clear sleeve.
"She's threatening you in writing."
"She's offering to drop the petition."
"In exchange for you delivering the child to her."
Claire's jaw tightened.
"I want to call her."
"Don't."
"I want her to hear me say no."
"She wants you angry."
Claire stared at the photograph.
That was when Leah's phone rang.
Adam.
Leah put him on speaker.
He was whispering again.
"I'm in the house."
Claire stood.
"Did you find the folder?"
"The study is locked from the inside."
"How?"
"I don't know."
A faint sound came through the call.
A door closing somewhere near him.
Adam stopped speaking.
Claire's pulse quickened.
"Adam?"
He whispered.
"She's home."
"Leave."
"The blue folder matters."
"Not enough to get trapped there."
"You don't understand."
"I understand perfectly."
Another sound came through the phone.
Eleanor's voice.
Distant at first.
"Adam?"
Claire froze.
Adam breathed once into the microphone.
"I have to go."
"Do not hang up."
The line went dead.
Claire immediately called back.
No answer.
She tried again.
Straight to voicemail.
Leah told her not to drive to the house.
Claire listened for exactly three minutes.
Then her phone vibrated.
A message from Adam.
One photograph.
The blue folder was open on a desk.
The first page showed the heading:
WHITMORE GENERATIONAL TRUST - VOTING RIGHTS SUMMARY.
Claire zoomed in.
A highlighted paragraph stated that proxy control would remain with Sophie's legal parent or court-appointed guardian until Sophie reached adulthood.
Another paragraph had been circled in red ink.
If neither parent retained full legal authority, the acting guardian would control the trust vote.
Below the paragraph, someone had handwritten a note.
4.8% decides the chair vote.
Claire's stomach dropped.
Sophie's trust owned 4.8 percent of Whitmore Development.
Enough to decide who controlled the company.
A second message arrived from Adam.
I FOUND MORE.
Then a third.
Claire stared at it.
It contained only one word.
RUN.
Before she could ask what he meant, a black SUV stopped across the street from Leah's office.
Two men stepped out.
May you like
One carried a camera.
The other carried a folder with Claire's name on it.
