Chapter 5 - A Husband With Two Voices.

Claire packed in less than four minutes.

Leah carried Sophie to the elevator while Claire shoved clothes, chargers, medication, and the child's stuffed rabbit into a duffel bag.

They left through the hotel's service exit and drove to Leah's sister's vacant apartment across town.

Only after the door was locked did Claire call Adam again.

"Start talking."

Adam sounded exhausted.

"I didn't know she would send anyone after you."

"You gave her our hotel."

"She said she wanted to serve an amended filing."

"She filed before the party."

Silence.

"I know."

Claire closed her eyes.

Sophie was coloring at the kitchen counter while Leah stood nearby.

"How long have you known?"

"About the petition?"

"About any of it."

Adam breathed into the phone.

"A month."

Claire felt strangely calm.

"A month."

"Mom said she was documenting problems in case things got worse between us."

"There were no problems between us until your mother started manufacturing them."

"I know that now."

"No."

Claire's voice sharpened.

"You knew Sophie was being filmed."

Adam went quiet.

Claire pressed harder.

"I watched the nursery clip."

He inhaled.

"Then you saw me tell her to stop."

"I saw you walk away."

"You don't understand what she had on me."

"I understand that your daughter reached for you and you left."

Adam said nothing.

Claire almost ended the call.

Then he spoke.

"Whitmore Development is close to defaulting on two major loans."

Claire stared at the wall.

The family company owned hotels, office towers, and luxury apartment buildings across three states.

Eleanor had spent decades presenting it as untouchable.

"What does that have to do with Sophie?"

"Granddad left voting shares in a trust for her."

Claire stopped moving.

"What?"

"Dad never told you because Mom told him it was complicated."

"Adam, Sophie is three."

"The shares are held until she's twenty-five."

"Then why does Eleanor care now?"

Another pause.

"Because the child's legal guardian directs the proxy vote until the trust transfers."

Claire looked at Leah.

Leah had heard enough to walk closer.

Adam continued.

"The board vote is next week."

"What vote?"

"Whether Mom stays chair."

Claire's skin went cold.

"She wants custody so she can control Sophie's shares."

"Temporary guardianship would be enough to create an argument."

"An argument?"

"Her lawyers think so."

Claire nearly threw the phone.

"Her lawyers."

Adam's voice broke.

"Claire, I thought she just wanted leverage."

"Leverage over who?"

"Me."

"Using our child."

Adam did not deny it.

Claire pressed her palm against her forehead.

"What did you sign?"

"An affidavit."

"I read it."

"And a family stabilization agreement."

Leah mouthed the words silently, asking Claire to repeat them.

Claire put the call on speaker.

"What is a family stabilization agreement?"

Adam hesitated.

"Mom's name for it."

"What did it actually do?"

"It gave her temporary authority to make financial and medical decisions for me if the board removed me as chief operating officer."

Leah's eyes narrowed.

"Did it mention Sophie?"

"I don't remember."

Claire laughed without humor.

"You signed a document involving your mother, your company, and our daughter without reading it?"

"I was trying to keep eight hundred people employed."

"And you decided Sophie was collateral."

Adam's voice rose.

"I did not decide that."

"You decided not to stop it."

The apartment became quiet.

Then Adam whispered something.

"There's a blue folder in my father's old study."

Claire looked at Leah.

"What's in it?"

"The original trust summary."

"Get it."

"Mom changed the locks after you left."

"Then find another way."

Adam breathed slowly.

"There is another way."

"What?"

"Dad kept a key behind the brass clock in the library."

Claire waited.

Adam's next words came even quieter.

"But if I go back into that house, my mother will know I've chosen you."

Claire looked toward Sophie.

"No, Adam."

May you like

Her voice was flat.

"She'll know you've finally chosen your daughter."
