Chapter 4 - The Camera in the Nursery.

Claire had installed the nursery camera when Sophie was born.
For almost three years, she had barely thought about it.
It sat high in the corner of Sophie's bedroom at home, connected to the Whitmore family cloud account.
Eleanor had always complained about cameras.
She called them paranoid.
She called them vulgar.
She said family should not need surveillance.
Now Claire understood why.
Leah opened her laptop at the hotel desk.
"Do you still have access?"
Claire entered the old password.
The account opened.
Four cameras appeared on the dashboard.
Nursery.
Front hall.
Kitchen.
Back patio.
Claire selected the nursery archive.
Most days showed ordinary clips.
Sophie sleeping.
Claire folding laundry.
Adam reading bedtime stories.
But every Sunday afternoon for the past two months contained a clean blank gap.
1:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m.
Exactly the hours Eleanor watched Sophie while Claire worked at the community arts center.
"Could the system have been off?" Leah asked.
Claire checked the activity log.
Her mouth went dry.
The camera had not failed.
Someone had manually disabled recording.
The account listed the user.
ADAM.W.
Claire stared at the screen until the letters blurred.
"He turned it off every Sunday."
Leah leaned closer.
"Keep going."
One Sunday was different.
The camera had restarted for eleven minutes at 3:17 p.m., likely after a software update.
Claire clicked the clip.
The nursery appeared empty at first.
Then the red storage-room door opened across the hall.
Sophie walked into view.
She was crying.
Eleanor followed her.
The grandmother wore a cream blouse and held a phone horizontally in front of the child.
"Again," Eleanor said on the recording.
Sophie wiped her face.
"I don't want to."
"Again."
"Mommy scares me."
"Louder."
Sophie looked toward the nursery.
"Mommy scares me."
Eleanor lowered the phone.
"And what happens when Mommy gets angry?"
Sophie shook her head.
"I forgot."
Eleanor's expression changed.
It became the same expression Claire had seen at the birthday table.
Controlled anger wrapped in perfect posture.
"We practiced this."
Sophie backed toward the red door.
"I want Mommy."
Eleanor stepped forward.
"Your mother is the reason we have to practice."
Claire's hand flew to her mouth.
Leah immediately started screen-recording the playback on a second device while downloading the original clip.
"Do not stop it," she said.
In the video, a man's voice came from downstairs.
Adam.
"Mom, enough."
Eleanor looked toward the hallway.
"Then come up here and tell me your alternative."
Footsteps approached.
Adam entered frame.
Claire stopped breathing.
He saw Sophie crying.
He saw his mother's phone.
He knew exactly what was happening.
"She's three," Adam said.
"And Claire is reckless."
"This isn't right."
Eleanor smiled at him.
"Then sign the papers and I won't need the videos."
Adam did not answer.
Sophie reached toward him.
"Daddy."
He looked at her.
For one terrible second, Claire believed he would pick her up.
He did not.
He walked out of frame.
The clip ended.
Claire sat perfectly still.
Leah saved three copies.
"This changes things."
"It changes my marriage."
"Claire."
"He knew."
Leah did not argue.
Claire clicked the archive again.
The screen refreshed.
A red warning appeared.
SESSION TERMINATED BY ADMINISTRATOR.
Then the entire video library vanished.
Claire tried to log back in.
PASSWORD INCORRECT.
Someone had changed the account credentials while they were watching.
Leah held up the downloaded file.
"We got one."
Claire looked at the dark laptop screen.
"They know we're looking."
A second later, Claire's phone rang.
The caller ID showed Adam.
When she answered, he did not say hello.
"Get out of that hotel."
Claire stood.
"Why?"
May you like
Adam's voice dropped to a whisper.
"Because I told my mother where you are."
