Chapter 10 - The Deal at Midnight.

Three knocks sounded against the front door.

Then came a pause.

Then two more.

Emma recognized Owen’s code immediately.

“That is him.”

Martin entered a release command on the service panel.

The front doors remained locked.

“Adrian has overridden me,” he said.

Daniel lifted the privacy screen by hand.

Owen stood outside between two police officers.

He held his wallet open and appeared to be explaining something.

Daniel struck the glass with his palm.

Owen turned.

For one second, brother and sister saw each other through the door.

Emma rushed to the glass.

“Owen!”

The screen dropped again, separating them.

The restaurant speakers activated.

Adrian’s voice filled the room.

“The board session begins in sixty seconds.”

Daniel looked at the clock above the bar.

It was 11:59.

“You said you were being used too,” Daniel called.

“That does not make us allies.”

“Who activated Afterlight?”

The speakers went silent for a moment.

When Adrian answered, the confidence had left his voice.

“Your father.”

“My father is gone.”

“His instructions are not.”

The clock reached midnight.

Every television behind the bar changed to the Cross Meridian board call.

Nine directors appeared on screen.

Daniel’s face occupied the center square, captured by the restaurant camera.

Adrian appeared from a dark office Daniel did not recognize.

“Members of the board,” Adrian began.

“I regret that we must address a serious breach of trust.”

Daniel stepped toward the nearest camera.

“Before you watch anything, ask Adrian where he is.”

Several directors began speaking at once.

Adrian remained composed.

“Daniel is under considerable pressure.”

“Show them the room,” Daniel said.

“Turn your camera.”

Adrian ignored him.

Vivian moved into view beside Daniel.

“I am Vivian Vale.”

“I was hired to negotiate a transfer of Daniel’s shares.”

“The documents were altered without my authorization.”

Adrian smiled sadly.

“Ms. Vale is attempting to protect herself.”

The board chair, Ruth Mercer, raised a hand.

“We will review the evidence in order.”

“No,” Daniel said.

“You will review the live facts first.”

He held the blue fountain pen toward the camera.

“This contains a recording from my father referencing the Afterlight protocol.”

Ruth’s expression changed.

“That protocol was dissolved.”

“You know about it?”

“Your father created it as an emergency control plan.”

Daniel felt a deeper betrayal forming.

“Who was authorized to activate it?”

Ruth looked toward Adrian’s square.

“Only three people.”

“Your father.”

“Me.”

“And Adrian Keller.”

Adrian leaned toward his camera.

“Which is why Daniel built this entire performance.”

The altered footage began playing across every screen.

It showed Daniel planting documents and paying Emma.

Board members watched in stunned silence.

Daniel did not interrupt.

He waited until the false version showed Emma receiving the money.

“Pause it,” he said.

Ruth paused the clip.

“Look at the service clock behind Emma.”

The clock in the video read 10:42.

Emma stepped into camera view.

“I clocked in at 10:58.”

Martin produced the staff tablet.

“The payroll log confirms it.”

Adrian’s smile disappeared.

Ruth examined another window.

“The log is valid.”

Daniel pointed toward his cuffs.

“And my shirt is wrong.”

One director leaned closer.

Another requested the original file metadata.

The balance of the meeting began to shift.

Then Adrian shared a new document.

It was a private letter written by Daniel’s father three weeks before his death.

The first sentence appeared in large type.

DANIEL MUST NEVER CONTROL AFTERLIGHT.

Daniel read the sentence without understanding it.

Ruth looked away from the screen.

Adrian spoke softly.

“Your father did not build the trap to remove me.”

“He built it to remove you.”
