Chapter 14 - The Recording Begins.

Emergency lights flickered on along the floor.
Emma pulled her hand away and turned toward the voice.
No one stood beside her.
Daniel was near the desk.
Vivian was at the music console.
Adrian and Martin remained by the door.
The owner’s suite had no other visible occupant.
“Who spoke?” Emma asked.
No one answered.
The countdown screen returned.
It still showed thirty seconds, but the APPROVE and DECLINE buttons had disappeared.
A third option appeared beneath them.
RECORD.
Owen climbed through the maintenance hatch.
Dust covered his jacket, and a small flashlight hung from his wrist.
Emma crossed the room and held him tightly.
For several seconds, the trap, the screens, and the waiting board vanished from her attention.
“I thought you were gone,” she said.
“I am sorry.”
“You should be.”
She stepped back and gripped his shoulders.
“Never do that again.”
Owen nodded.
“I found the original Afterlight line beneath the building.”
“Ruth’s commands were traveling through it.”
Daniel pointed toward the new option.
“What does record mean?”
“Afterlight was built to decide between competing instructions.”
“I gave it a situation with no verified decision-maker.”
“Now it wants sworn statements from everyone present.”
Vivian studied the console.
“Statements sent where?”
“To the entire board, three outside auditors, and the company’s legal archive.”
Adrian gave a bitter smile.
“A confession room.”
“A truth room,” Emma said.
“Those are different only when someone tells the truth.”
The RECORD button began flashing.
Daniel pressed it.
A red light illuminated above the main camera.
“My name is Daniel Cross,” he said.
“I came to Aurelia to negotiate with Vivian Vale.”
“I did not transfer company funds, plant documents, or pay Emma Bennett.”
“I also failed to question Adrian’s access because I trusted our history more than I trusted proper oversight.”
He stepped aside.
Vivian entered the frame.
“My name is Vivian Vale.”
“I agreed to seek temporary control of Daniel’s shares after receiving records that appeared genuine.”
“I did not verify those records independently.”
“I allowed urgency and ambition to replace judgment.”
“That failure helped create tonight’s trap.”
Martin spoke next.
He admitted accepting Adrian’s money, surrendering staff files, and signing documents that blamed Vivian.
He did not excuse himself.
Emma respected that more than another apology.
Owen explained the frequency messages and the evidence vault.
He admitted that some recordings were unverified decoys.
Then Adrian stood before the camera.
He looked at Daniel for a long time.
“My name is Adrian Keller.”
“I altered Cross Meridian records and created the video shown to the board.”
“I did it because I believed the company owed me control.”
“I also believed I was directing the operation.”
“I was wrong.”
He shared the original messages and the payments he had received through Northstar Hospitality.
The final payment authorization carried Ruth Mercer’s private certificate.
Ruth’s face reappeared on a small screen.
“These statements are made under coercion,” she said.
“The archive will reject them.”
Owen shook his head.
“The archive is receiving every original system log with them.”
Ruth looked toward someone outside her camera frame.
“End the transmission.”
“You cannot,” Owen said.
“Afterlight controls the route now.”
Emma took the last position before the camera.
Her white shirt was wrinkled, and her ponytail had nearly come loose.
She did not look like an executive trustee.
She looked like the only person in the room who had acted before knowing what she might gain.
“My name is Emma Bennett.”
“I warned Daniel because I saw a folder switched.”
“I did not know his history, his company, or the value of his shares.”
“I knew only that someone was being cornered with false information.”
“I reject any authority created with my copied signature.”
“I also reject a system that protects a company by treating people as pieces on a board.”
The RECORD light turned green.
The transfer screen vanished.
A new message appeared.
EMPLOYEE TRUSTEE VERIFIED BY INDEPENDENT ACTION.
Emma stared at the words.
“It still chose me.”
Daniel read the line beneath them.
“Only to make one decision.”
RELEASE ALL ORIGINAL RECORDS?
Emma pressed YES.
Across the city, phones began ringing.
Inside Aurelia, the front doors finally opened.
But before the police entered, Ruth Mercer’s image disappeared from the screen.
