Chapter 12 - Vivian's Real Bargain.

Ruth’s face remained on the restaurant screens while the other directors disappeared.

She did not look surprised by the interruption.

That was the detail Daniel could not ignore.

“You knew this would happen,” he said.

Ruth folded her hands in front of her.

“I knew Afterlight would respond to a verified governance failure.”

“That is not what I asked.”

“Daniel, your father built a system that could protect the company from any one executive.”

“Including you,” Vivian said.

“Including everyone,” Ruth replied.

Vivian stepped closer to the camera.

“Who controls the trust?”

Ruth’s calm shifted by the smallest degree.

“The trustees are confidential.”

“Not anymore.”

Vivian removed the gold bracelet from her wrist.

Inside the clasp was a narrow storage chip.

Daniel stared at it.

“How many hidden recordings did you bring to dinner?”

“Enough to survive the people who invited me.”

She inserted the chip into Martin’s staff tablet.

A trust certificate appeared.

AFTERLIGHT EMPLOYEE PRESERVATION TRUST.

Three trustee positions were listed.

The independent position belonged to Vivian Vale.

The employee position was vacant.

The emergency position belonged to Ruth Mercer.

Emma read the names over Vivian’s shoulder.

“You were the trustee?”

Vivian nodded.

“Daniel’s father hired me to keep the network from being sold during a leadership crisis.”

Daniel struggled to contain his anger.

“Tonight you threatened to take my shares.”

“I threatened to place them under temporary custody.”

“Using false evidence.”

“I did not know the evidence was false when I arrived.”

“You did not bother to verify it.”

Vivian accepted the accusation without looking away.

“That was my failure.”

Ruth’s voice came through the speakers.

“Do not let regret distract you from the company’s immediate need.”

Daniel faced her image.

“Did you order Adrian to frame me?”

“No.”

“Did you send the frequency messages?”

“No.”

“Did you know the letter would transfer authority to Afterlight?”

Ruth paused.

“Yes.”

The admission settled across the room.

Martin leaned against the bar as if the last support beneath his decisions had vanished.

Emma focused on the trust certificate.

“Why is the employee position vacant?”

Vivian looked at her.

“Because the appointed representative disappeared before signing.”

Emma already knew the answer.

“Owen.”

“Your brother discovered that someone was using Afterlight to pressure the board.”

“He refused the appointment and vanished.”

“That is why Adrian needed him tonight,” Daniel said.

“With Owen’s signature, the trust becomes active.”

Ruth’s image expanded on every screen.

“The trust is already active.”

Above them, a door slammed.

Footsteps moved across the owner’s suite.

Emma looked toward the staircase.

“Owen is still up there.”

Daniel took the brass key from Vivian.

“Then we bring him down.”

Vivian blocked his path.

“If the trust has activated, every action is being recorded.”

“Good.”

“No.”

Her voice dropped.

“Afterlight does not protect people.”

“It protects continuity.”

“If it identifies any of us as a threat, it will lock us out permanently.”

“Of the company?” Emma asked.

“Of the network, the building, and every account attached to tonight’s transfer.”

Daniel looked at Ruth.

“That was your real plan.”

“You used Adrian’s resentment to trigger a crisis.”

“You used Vivian’s contract to prove outside interference.”

“You used Emma and Owen to prove an internal breach.”

“Then Afterlight placed everything under your emergency authority.”

Ruth’s expression remained composed.

“I protected what your father built.”

“By destroying everyone he trusted.”

“Trust is what created this failure.”

The owner’s-suite door opened at the top of the stairs.

Adrian appeared alone.

He held the white envelope from table twelve.

“Owen is gone,” he said.

Emma rushed toward him.

“Where?”

Adrian looked at the envelope as though he were afraid to open it.

“He was never the employee trustee.”

“Then who is?” Daniel asked.

Adrian handed the envelope to Emma.
