Chapter 9 - The Voice Behind the Wall.

Martin led them through the staff corridor toward the main dining room.

The restaurant had changed completely.

Empty chairs stood at crooked angles.

Napkins lay on the floor.

Candle flames continued burning as if the room had not noticed the panic.

Sirens sounded faintly outside, but the locked doors had released only the guests.

The service exits remained sealed.

“Police will be at the front,” Emma said.

“Then why are we not going to them?”

Martin pointed toward the windows.

Dark privacy screens had lowered behind the glass.

“Adrian can keep this section isolated for another ten minutes.”

“Ten minutes is enough,” Daniel said.

“For what?”

“For the board report to arrive.”

They reached the piano.

Martin moved it away from the wall, revealing a narrow maintenance panel.

“Aurelia used to be a radio studio,” he explained.

“There is an old soundproof booth behind this wall.”

Emma found the latch.

Inside was a space no larger than a closet.

Acoustic panels covered every surface.

A microphone stood on a small desk beside an analog tape recorder.

“Analog,” Vivian said.

“No network connection.”

“No remote alteration,” Daniel added.

Emma pressed the playback button.

Owen’s voice emerged through the tiny speaker.

“If Emma hears this, Adrian found me.”

Emma closed her eyes.

Owen continued.

“The person directing him is not using email, messages, or company systems.”

“They communicate through scheduled audio hidden in Aurelia’s music files.”

Daniel looked toward the silent piano.

“The background music,” he said.

The tape played on.

“Every instruction arrives as a frequency pattern beneath a song.”

“I decoded three messages.”

“The first ordered Adrian to frame Daniel Cross.”

“The second ordered him to place Vivian Vale inside the scene.”

“The third contained one sentence.”

The tape clicked.

A distorted voice followed.

AFTER MIDNIGHT, ADRIAN BECOMES THE EVIDENCE.

The recording ended.

Daniel stared at the tape reels.

“Adrian is being trapped too.”

Vivian did not look convinced.

“Or he made another recording to create sympathy.”

Emma rewound the tape.

“Owen would not risk this unless he verified it.”

“Can we identify the voice?” Daniel asked.

Martin shook his head.

“The restaurant music system is upstairs.”

“Where?”

“The owner’s office.”

Vivian’s voice turned cold.

“That is my office.”

They left the booth and crossed the dining room.

As Daniel passed table seven, he noticed the fountain pen still resting beside the contract.

The original transfer agreement had returned.

He picked it up.

The pages were genuine.

Vivian’s company details were correct.

Only the signature line had changed.

It no longer asked Daniel to surrender his shares to Vale Strategic Partners.

It transferred them to a trust named AFTERLIGHT.

“Was that trust in your document?” Daniel asked.

Vivian read the page.

“No.”

Martin stepped backward.

“I have heard that name.”

“Where?”

“Adrian used it when he purchased the restaurant equipment.”

Daniel searched the agreement for a trustee.

The field was blank.

Emma pointed toward the fountain pen.

“That is not the same pen.”

The original had been black with a gold clip.

This one was dark blue with a silver band.

Daniel opened it.

Instead of ink, the barrel contained a tiny audio drive.

Vivian placed it into her recorder.

A familiar male voice began speaking.

It was Daniel’s late father, recorded years earlier.

“If you are hearing this, someone has activated the Afterlight protocol.”

Daniel gripped the table.

His father had died five years ago.

No one outside the Cross family knew that name.

The recording continued.

“Do not trust the person who brought you to Aurelia.”

Daniel looked at Vivian.

Vivian looked at Martin.

Emma looked toward the front doors.

Outside, beyond the privacy screens, someone began knocking in a slow and deliberate rhythm.
