Chapter 6 - The Private Dining Room.

Emma stared at the monitor as if the glass could open beneath her hands.
Owen Bennett had disappeared eleven months earlier after being blamed for a breach at Aurelia.
The police had found his apartment empty and his bank account untouched.
Emma had spent every free evening searching hospitals, shelters, and public records.
Now he sat twenty yards away beneath a candle, looking older than his thirty years.
“Open the front dining-room feed,” she demanded.
Daniel switched cameras.
The angle changed to a wide view of table twelve.
Owen sat alone.
No one appeared to be guarding him.
The white envelope remained beside his plate.
Vivian pointed toward his jacket.
“Look at the lapel.”
A tiny microphone had been clipped near the seam.
“They want him to speak,” Daniel said.
The desk phone remained connected.
Adrian listened without interrupting.
Daniel leaned toward the speaker.
“What do you want from Owen?”
“Nothing I do not already have.”
“Then let him leave.”
“You are still approaching this like a negotiation.”
Adrian sounded almost disappointed.
“It is not.”
“What is it?”
“A correction.”
The call ended.
At the same moment, every security monitor changed to the same image.
Daniel saw himself entering Aurelia earlier that evening.
The recording showed him greeting Martin and handing the manager a black envelope.
That had never happened.
The video continued into the private dining room.
In the altered footage, Daniel opened Vivian’s folder and placed the false bank statements inside.
Then Emma entered and accepted a thick stack of money from him.
The manufactured scene looked seamless.
Even Daniel needed a second to identify the subtle errors.
His shirt cuffs were fastened in the recording.
He had worn them open all evening.
Emma’s ponytail fell over the wrong shoulder.
“That is not me,” she said.
“It does not need to survive a technical review,” Vivian replied.
“It only needs to reach the board first.”
Daniel searched the console for an external connection.
All network indicators showed active traffic.
“The file is being prepared for release.”
“Can you stop it?” Emma asked.
“Not from this screen.”
Vivian examined the locked cabinets.
“Original footage is usually stored locally before it is copied.”
Emma pointed to a cabinet labeled ARCHIVE.
The brass key opened that lock too.
Inside were rows of drives and a small black recorder.
Daniel removed the recorder.
Its display showed one saved file.
11:07 P.M. - TABLE 12.
He pressed play.
Adrian appeared on the small screen, seated across from Owen before the restaurant opened for dinner.
“You will restore the access route at eleven thirty,” Adrian said in the recording.
“Then your sister walks away.”
Owen shook his head.
“You will use it to alter the Cross Meridian records.”
“I already altered them.”
“Then why do you need me?”
“Because Daniel built a verification layer I cannot bypass.”
Adrian slid the white envelope across the table.
“Inside is your sister’s work schedule, her home address, and every place she searched for you.”
Owen did not open it.
“Leave Emma out of this.”
“Restore the route.”
The recording ended.
Emma covered her face for one brief second.
When she lowered her hands, fear had become determination.
“Owen did not vanish.”
“He hid to protect you,” Daniel said.
“And Adrian found him.”
Vivian took the recorder.
“This clears Daniel and Emma.”
“It also exposes Adrian,” Daniel said.
“Assuming we can get it outside.”
The steel door opened behind them.
Martin stood in the doorway.
He had no smile now.
“Give me the recorder.”
Daniel stepped between Martin and Emma.
“You work for Adrian.”
“Tonight, I work for the person who owns this building.”
Vivian’s eyes narrowed.
“Adrian does not own Aurelia.”
Martin looked directly at her.
“Neither do you.”
The lights above them turned red.
An alarm began sounding in the corridor.
Martin extended his hand.

“Give me the recorder, or every door in this restaurant remains locked when the fire system activates.”
