Chapter 5 - The Second Message.

The panel closed behind Daniel just as the private dining-room door opened.
The service corridor was barely wide enough for one person.
Unpainted pipes ran along the ceiling.
The warmth of the restaurant disappeared behind concrete walls and cold fluorescent lights.
Emma moved quickly, guiding them through two turns and down a short staircase.
“Where does this lead?” Daniel asked.
“The wine cellar, the loading dock, and the staff lockers.”
“Which one has an exit?”
“The loading dock.”
Vivian checked her second phone.
“No signal.”
“The walls are reinforced,” Emma said.
“The owner stores rare bottles down here.”
Behind them, the hidden panel opened.
Martin called into the passage.
“You are making this more difficult than necessary.”
Emma quickened her pace.
They reached a junction marked by three brass arrows.
LOADING pointed left.
CELLAR pointed right.
SECURITY pointed straight ahead.
Daniel stopped.
“We need the security office.”
Vivian stared at him.
“We need the exit.”
“Adrian has video, false documents, and control of the locks.”
“All excellent reasons to leave.”
“If we leave without the original recording, he releases his version first.”
“And if we stay, he may decide we never leave.”
Emma looked back toward the footsteps approaching through the corridor.
“Argue while moving.”
She led them toward security.
The corridor ended at a steel door with a keypad.
Emma entered four digits.
The panel flashed red.
“They changed the code.”
Vivian removed the brass key marked 12 from her evening bag.
“Try this.”
The steel door had no visible keyhole.
Daniel examined the wall and noticed a narrow brass plate beneath the keypad.
The key fit perfectly.
The lock released.
“Someone wanted us to reach this room,” he said.
“That does not mean we should,” Vivian replied.
Martin’s footsteps were getting closer.
Daniel opened the door.
The security office contained six monitors, an empty chair, and a wall of locked cabinets.
Live camera feeds showed every public area of the restaurant.
On one screen, guests crowded around the front doors.
On another, Martin stood in the service corridor twenty yards behind them.
A third displayed the private dining room they had just left.
The leather folder was visible on the table.
Vivian looked down.
The folder in her hands had vanished.
She stared at her empty fingers.
“That is not possible.”
Daniel replayed the last minute in his mind.
She had carried the folder through the panel.
He had seen it against her side at the first turn.
After that, he had focused on the corridor.
“Someone passed us,” Emma whispered.
“No one passed us,” Daniel said.
Vivian opened her bag.
Inside was a folded white napkin.
She removed it carefully.
A second torn message waited inside.
THIS TRAP HAS TWO TARGETS.
Daniel read the words over her shoulder.
“You and me?”
Vivian looked toward Emma.
“No.”
Emma stepped backward.
“I do not understand.”
“Adrian already has what he needs to frame Daniel,” Vivian said.
“The second target is the person who can prove the evidence was planted.”
Daniel turned toward the monitors.
The feed showing the service corridor had frozen.
Martin’s image remained still with one foot raised.
The time code continued advancing.
“The cameras are looping,” Daniel said.
Emma reached for the desk phone.
It rang before she touched it.
All three stared at the blinking line.
Daniel answered on speaker.
Adrian’s voice was calm.
“Emma Bennett.”
Emma gripped the edge of the desk.
“How do you know my full name?”
“Because your brother designed this security system.”
Emma stopped breathing for a moment.
Daniel looked at her.
“Your brother?”
“Owen worked here last year,” she said.
Adrian continued before she could explain.
“And because Owen is waiting at table twelve.”
The monitor showing the shadowed alcove flickered.
A man now sat at the empty table.
His head was lowered.
His hands rested beside the white envelope.
Emma moved closer to the screen.
“Owen.”
The man slowly raised his face toward the camera.
Then he formed two silent words with his lips.
