Chapter 10 - The Locked Drawer.

Daniel returned to the mansion just after noon with Claire beside him.

Lily stayed with Arthur and Teresa at Claire's house.

Daniel did not want her near the confrontation.

Vanessa's car was gone.

That did not reassure him.

It meant they had limited time before she returned.

The mansion looked exactly as it always had.

Sunlight fell across the marble.

Fresh flowers stood in the foyer.

The silver bucket was gone.

So was the black-and-white uniform.

Someone had cleaned the scene.

Claire noticed Daniel looking at the floor.

"Photograph it anyway."

He did.

They began in Lily's room.

The red box was where they had left it, but several drawers had been rearranged.

Claire checked the closet.

"Someone came in here after you left."

Daniel's jaw tightened.

They moved to the library.

Vanessa kept a small writing desk near the windows.

Daniel had never opened it.

He tried the top drawer.

Locked.

Claire looked at him.

"Do you have the right to access it?"

"It's jointly owned furniture in our home, but I don't want to create a problem by forcing anything."

"Good. Photograph the lock."

He did.

Then he remembered the brass key taped beneath the red box lid.

Daniel took it from his pocket.

The key slid into the desk lock perfectly.

Claire exhaled.

"That's convenient."

"Too convenient."

Inside the drawer were no dramatic stacks of cash and no secret passports.

There were folders.

Neat, labeled folders.

LILY - SCHOOL.

LILY - MEDICAL.

LILY - COMMUNICATIONS.

DANIEL - SCHEDULE.

FAMILY FINANCIAL.

Claire put on disposable gloves from the emergency kit she kept in her car.

"Photograph before touching."

Daniel obeyed.

The first folder contained printed copies of messages between Lily and friends.

Some appeared to come from screenshots of Lily's phone.

Several innocent jokes had been highlighted in red.

One message from Maya read, Your stepmom is intense.

Beside it Vanessa had written, Outside influence encourages disrespect.

Daniel shook his head.

The school folder contained teacher emails.

Most were positive.

A note from Lily's science teacher praised her curiosity and work ethic.

Vanessa had printed only the sentence mentioning that Lily sometimes rushed quizzes.

Beside it she had written, Academic decline.

Claire's mouth tightened.

"Selective documentation."

The medical folder contained Dr. Keller's intake forms.

The disputed digital consent was there.

Then Daniel found the boarding school application.

A handwritten note was clipped to the top.

Potential January start.

Daniel felt anger rise again.

Claire pointed to another line.

Need D to believe decision was his idea.

Daniel stared at the initial.

D.

Him.

He sat back in the chair.

"She was going to manipulate me into sending Lily away."

Claire did not soften it.

"That is what this note suggests."

They opened FAMILY FINANCIAL last.

Most pages were ordinary household documents.

Then Claire found a printed article about trustee incapacity.

Another page discussed marital property rules.

A third contained handwritten calculations of Daniel's net worth.

Vanessa had circled the mansion's estimated value.

Daniel looked ill.

"There it is."

Claire shook her head.

"Maybe. Don't jump farther than the documents support."

A car door slammed outside.

Daniel and Claire froze.

Vanessa had returned.

Her heels crossed the foyer.

The library door opened.

She stopped when she saw them beside the unlocked desk.

For two full seconds no one spoke.

Then Vanessa smiled.

It was not warm.

"So now we're searching my belongings."

Claire stood.

"We found the key in Lily's closet."

Vanessa's gaze moved to the open folders.

"Daniel, you have no idea what you're looking at."

"I know what a boarding school application looks like."

Her expression changed by one degree.

"You were going to be told."

"When? After she was accepted?"

"When you were calm enough to listen."

Daniel pointed to the note.

"Need D to believe decision was his idea."

Vanessa finally looked unsettled.

"You are taking private planning notes out of context."

Claire spoke for the first time.

"Then give us the context."

Vanessa looked at her with open dislike.

"This is a marriage issue."

"No," Claire replied. "The moment it involved Lily, false signatures, school applications, and counseling records, it stopped being only a marriage issue."

Vanessa turned to Daniel.

"She has always hated me."

"Claire is not the person who made Lily wear that uniform."

"That uniform was one afternoon."

Daniel stared at her.

"It was at least three weeks."

Vanessa realized the mistake immediately.

She had just contradicted herself.

Claire noticed too.

"Interesting."

Vanessa's face hardened.

"Get out of my desk."

Daniel closed the folder.

"I will."

Then he lifted his phone.

"After I make copies."

Vanessa stepped forward.

"You will not take those documents."

Daniel did not move.

"Why?"

Her eyes flashed toward the FAMILY FINANCIAL folder.

It was the first honest reaction he had seen from her.

And it told him exactly which file frightened her most.
