Chapter 5 - The Camera No One Remembered.

The old camera recording had no dramatic music and no perfect angle.
That made it worse.
It showed the service corridor exactly as it had been on Friday afternoon.
Lily entered the frame wearing the uniform and carrying a tray with a glass of water and a folded cloth.
Vanessa followed behind her.
The audio was faint but clear enough.
"You can come out when you are ready to apologize properly."
Lily's voice answered.
"I already said I'm sorry."
"Not with that tone."
Vanessa opened the study door.
Lily stepped inside.
Then Vanessa closed it.
The camera could not see the lock, but it captured the metallic click.
Daniel stopped the video.
His face had gone pale.
"You locked her in."
Vanessa spoke quickly.
"For eleven minutes."
"You counted?"
"Because I knew exactly what I was doing."
Daniel stared at her.
"That sentence does not help you."
He played the next clip.
Eleven minutes later Vanessa returned and unlocked the study.
Lily came out with red eyes.
Vanessa handed her the tray.
"Now let's try again."
Lily whispered something.
The microphone barely caught it.
Daniel increased the volume.
"Please don't tell Dad I ruined everything."
Daniel stopped the recording again.
His hand shook.
For a moment he had to put the phone down on the desk.
Vanessa crossed the room.
"Daniel, I was trying to correct behavior before it became a larger problem."
"By convincing her she was disappointing me?"
"She respects you."
"You used that against her."
Vanessa's voice sharpened.
"I used the only thing that worked."
Daniel looked at her as though he no longer recognized the woman in front of him.
"Do you hear yourself?"
A soft knock came at the library door.
Lily stood outside.
"Dad?"
Daniel immediately opened it.
"I'm here."
She noticed the frozen video on the desk.
Her face changed.
"You saw it."
"Yes."
"Are you mad?"
Daniel's expression broke.
"At you? Never."
Lily looked toward Vanessa.
Vanessa attempted a gentler tone.
"Lily, you know I care about you."
Lily moved behind Daniel.
The movement was small.
Its meaning was not.
Daniel turned slightly so his body shielded her.
"Do not ask her to reassure you."
Vanessa's eyes flashed.
"You are turning her against me."
"I have said almost nothing."
"Exactly. You're letting a child define the entire situation."
Lily spoke from behind him.
"I didn't want any of this."
Vanessa went quiet.
Lily's voice trembled, but she continued.
"I tried to do everything you asked."
"Lily—"
"I cleaned my room. I finished homework. I wore the uniform. I didn't call Dad."
Each sentence seemed to make Daniel stand straighter.
"And every time I did it, there was something else."
Vanessa's face tightened.
"Because you kept challenging me."
"I asked when Dad was coming home."
The simplicity of the answer filled the room.
Daniel turned to his daughter.
"What else did she ask you to do?"
Lily looked down.
"Keep a notebook."
Vanessa's head snapped toward her.
Daniel noticed.
"What notebook?"
Lily's voice became smaller.
"She made me write down every time I was ungrateful."
Daniel's jaw tightened.
"Where is it?"
"In my desk."
Vanessa stepped forward.
"That was private reflection."
Daniel looked at her.
"No. It was something involving my daughter, and I am going to read it with her permission."
He turned to Lily.
"Do you want me to see it?"
Lily hesitated.
Then she nodded.
"I think you need to."
They went upstairs together.
Vanessa remained in the library.
Daniel did not tell her to stay.
He simply expected her not to follow.
For the first time that afternoon, she obeyed.
Lily's bedroom looked almost exactly as Daniel remembered from breakfast that morning.
Books stacked beside the bed.
A half-finished model of the solar system on her desk.
A photograph of Rebecca beside a small lamp.
Lily opened the bottom drawer.
The notebook was gone.
She froze.
"It was here."
Daniel crouched beside the desk.
"Are you sure?"
"I put it under my math folder this morning."
He looked toward the doorway.
Vanessa was not there.
Lily pulled open the next drawer.
Empty.
Then another.
Nothing.
Daniel's gaze moved across the room.
The closet door stood slightly open.
Inside, on the top shelf, sat a red storage box Daniel had never seen.
Lily stared at it.
"That's not mine."
Daniel reached up and brought it down.
A small brass key had been taped beneath the lid.
Inside the box were printed emails, school reports, copies of Daniel's travel calendar, and several pages written in Vanessa's handwriting.
At the top of the first page was a title.
LILY - BEHAVIOR PLAN.

And beneath it was a date from six months earlier.
Long before the uniform.
