Chapter 12 - What Happened Thursday Morning.

Daniel read the final sentence twice.
Then he closed the notebook.
"What happened Thursday morning?"
Vanessa leaned back in her chair.
"Nothing."
"Lily thought you knew she planned to tell me."
"Children imagine motives."
"Did you find this notebook before I came home?"
"No."
Daniel looked toward the kitchen doorway.
Teresa stood there as agreed, close enough to hear but not intruding.
Her face changed.
Daniel noticed.
"Teresa?"
Vanessa turned sharply.
"She is not part of this."
Daniel ignored her.
"Do you know something about Thursday morning?"
Teresa hesitated.
"I saw Mrs. Whitmore in Lily's room."
Vanessa's voice sharpened.
"You were cleaning."
Teresa looked at Daniel.
"I was looking for a missing pillowcase."
"What time?"
"Around ten."
Daniel knew Lily was at school then.
"What was she doing?"
Teresa glanced at Vanessa.
"Reading something at the desk."
The notebook.
Daniel's expression went cold.
"You found it Thursday morning."
Vanessa stood.
"This is absurd."
Daniel remained seated.
"You knew she planned to tell me."
"I did not know you were coming home early."
"But you knew she wanted to tell me."
Vanessa's face tightened.
Daniel continued.
"Is that why the uniform came out again?"
"She had responsibilities."
"Is that why her phone was disabled?"
"She had lost privileges."
"Is that why the security recordings were deleted?"
Vanessa picked up her water glass, then set it down without drinking.
"You have decided what you want to believe."
"No. I am following what you documented."
Daniel opened the notebook again.
"She wrote that she was afraid to tell me because you said I would send her away."
Vanessa said nothing.
"Then you submitted a boarding school application."
Still nothing.
"Then you forged my consent for a counselor who was told Lily had behavioral problems."
"I did not forge—"
"The signature audit shows it happened from our home while I was on an airplane."
Vanessa stopped.
Teresa looked stunned.
Daniel continued, more quietly now.
"You built a story in which Lily was difficult enough to remove from this house."
Vanessa's eyes filled again.
"Because she was destroying our marriage."
The sentence came out before she could stop it.
Daniel stared at her.
Teresa lowered her eyes.
Vanessa realized what she had said.
"That's not what I meant."
Daniel stood slowly.
"Say exactly what you meant."
"Every plan revolved around her. Every trip changed because of her. Every anniversary became about Rebecca. Every decision in this house started with what Lily needed."
Daniel felt something inside him settle.
Not rage.
Clarity.
"She is my child."
"And I am your wife."
"Those roles are not competitors."
Vanessa laughed once, bitterly.
"Easy for you to say."
Daniel looked at her for a long moment.
"You wanted her gone."
Vanessa did not deny it.
"I wanted space for us."
"So you tried to make me believe sending her away was necessary."
"I thought structure would help her."
"No."
His voice was final.
"You thought distance would help you."
Vanessa's eyes hardened.
"And what now? You destroy ten years because your daughter didn't like chores?"
Daniel looked almost amazed.
"Ten years? We've been married four."
Vanessa looked confused.
He continued.
"You are so committed to controlling the story that you just exaggerated our marriage by six years."
Teresa looked away to hide a startled reaction.
Vanessa's face flushed.
"You know what I meant."
"I do."
Daniel picked up Lily's notebook.
"And I know what happens next."
"What?"
"You and I communicate through attorneys for now."
Vanessa's face changed completely.
"Daniel."
"Lily will not return to this house while you are living here."
"You can't throw me out."
"I am not throwing you out tonight. I am leaving."
He turned toward Teresa.
"Thank you for being here. You should go home."
Teresa nodded.
Vanessa followed Daniel into the foyer.
"You will regret humiliating me like this."
He stopped at the front door.
"This is not about humiliating you."
"Then what is it about?"
Daniel thought of Lily whispering Dad from the wet marble floor.
"Making sure she never has to ask permission to feel safe in her own home again."
His phone buzzed.
A message from Claire.
CALL ME NOW.
Daniel stepped outside and answered.
Claire did not waste time.
"The school principal just forwarded me something Vanessa sent this morning."
"What?"
"A request to withdraw Lily from school effective tomorrow."
Daniel closed his eyes.
May you like
Vanessa had not merely been planning for January.
She had accelerated everything after finding the notebook.
