Chapter 3 - The Calls That Never Reached Him.

Lily came down the stairs wearing gray sweatpants, a navy sweatshirt, and Daniel's jacket still around her shoulders.

She stopped halfway when she saw her phone in his hand.

"You found it."

Daniel looked at her carefully.

"Were you looking for it?"

Lily nodded.

Vanessa stepped in quickly.

"She knew it was taken away."

Daniel raised one hand without looking at his wife.

"I am asking Lily."

The hallway went silent.

Lily descended the final steps slowly.

"I tried to call you after school on Monday."

Daniel's stomach dropped.

"I didn't get a call."

"I know."

She stared at the marble between them.

"Vanessa said I was not allowed to bother you while you were working."

Daniel thought of the weekly status meetings that filled his afternoons.

He had always told Lily she could call if she needed him.

Always.

"What happened Monday?"

Vanessa interrupted.

"Nothing happened."

Lily's shoulders tightened.

Daniel saw it.

"Vanessa, go to the library."

His wife stared at him.

"Excuse me?"

"I need five minutes alone with my daughter."

"This is my home too."

Daniel's voice remained calm.

"Then respect the fact that she is asking to speak to her father."

Lily had not actually asked.

But her eyes had.

Vanessa picked up her wine glass and walked toward the library with deliberate dignity.

The door closed harder than necessary.

Daniel sat on the bottom stair so Lily did not have to look up at him.

"Tell me about Monday."

Lily twisted the sleeve of his jacket around her fingers.

"I got a B minus on a science quiz."

Daniel waited.

"That's it?"

"She said I was becoming lazy because you gave me everything."

Lily blinked quickly.

"She said I needed to understand what people had to do when they didn't work hard."

Daniel struggled to keep his face neutral.

"And the uniform?"

"She made me put it on after school."

"Made you clean?"

"The upstairs hallway and guest bathroom."

Daniel took a slow breath.

"Why didn't you tell me that night?"

Lily looked ashamed.

"She said you already knew."

Daniel's throat tightened.

"She said I agreed to it?"

Lily nodded.

"She said you were worried I was spoiled."

For several seconds Daniel could not speak.

Lily mistook his silence for confirmation.

"I was trying to do better."

He reached for her hand.

"Lily, listen to me. I never asked her to do this."

Her eyes lifted sharply.

"You didn't?"

"No."

The confusion on her face turned slowly into hurt.

It was not anger at Vanessa yet.

It was the pain of realizing she had spent weeks believing her father had approved of something that frightened and humiliated her.

"She said you didn't want me calling because you were tired of dealing with my attitude."

Daniel closed his eyes for one second.

"That was not true either."

Lily began crying again, silently this time.

Daniel pulled her close.

She held herself stiffly for a moment before finally leaning into him.

"I thought you were mad at me."

"I wasn't."

"I thought maybe you didn't want me around so much anymore."

"Never."

Daniel's answer came too quickly to doubt.

He held her until her breathing slowed.

Then he asked the question he feared most.

"Has Vanessa ever stopped you from leaving a room?"

Lily hesitated.

"Sometimes she said I had to stay until I apologized."

"Did she lock the door?"

"Only the study once."

Daniel's body went still.

"When?"

"Last Friday."

He remembered Friday.

He had flown to Boston for a conference and returned after midnight.

Vanessa had texted him that Lily had gone to bed early after a wonderful evening.

"How long?"

"I don't know."

"Were you scared?"

Lily nodded.

Daniel stood.

The movement was so sudden Lily looked up.

He softened immediately.

"I'm not angry with you."

"I know."

He walked toward the library door.

Then he stopped.

On the wall beside it was a small security panel connected to the mansion's camera system.

Daniel had installed the system two years earlier after a neighborhood burglary.

The cameras recorded entry halls, common spaces, and exterior doors.

He rarely checked them.

Vanessa knew that.

He entered his code.

The panel displayed a warning.

ARCHIVE STORAGE ERROR.

Daniel frowned.

The system had been serviced less than a month ago.

He opened the settings.

Seven days of recordings were missing.

Not corrupted.

Deleted.

He looked toward the closed library door.

Lily saw his expression.

"Dad?"

Daniel tapped the audit log.

One administrator account had accessed the archive on Tuesday night.

The account name read VWHITMORE.

Daniel's face went cold.

Inside the library, a glass touched wood with a quiet click.

Vanessa had been listening.
