Chapter 7 - The Story Vanessa Prepared.

Claire Whitmore opened her front door before Daniel reached the porch.
She wore jeans, a white blouse, and the expression of someone already prepared to solve a problem.
Then she saw Lily.
Her face softened immediately.
"Hey, kiddo."
Lily stepped into her aunt's arms.
Daniel looked away for a moment because the sight almost broke his composure.
Claire led them inside and locked the door.
"Guest room is ready. Pizza is coming. Nobody has to explain anything until they're ready."
Lily managed the first genuine smile Daniel had seen all afternoon.
"Can I shower?"
"Absolutely."
When Lily went upstairs, Daniel placed the red box on Claire's dining table.
"Start with this."
Claire read the first page.
Her jaw tightened.
"Who wrote this?"
"Vanessa."
"You knew nothing about it?"
"Nothing."
Daniel explained the uniform, the deleted camera recordings, the service-corridor clips, the missing phone, and the locked study.
Claire listened without interrupting.
When he finished, she sat back.
"Daniel, this is not one bad afternoon."
"I know."
"It is a pattern."
"I know."
"And she planned for you not to see it."
Daniel rubbed both hands over his face.
"I know."
Claire's voice softened.
"I'm not trying to blame you."
"I should have seen something."
"Maybe. But that is not the same as causing it."
Daniel looked toward the staircase.
"Lily thought I approved."
That was the part he could not release.
Claire closed the red box.
"Then your job now is to prove, through actions, that you didn't."
Daniel's phone buzzed.
A message from Vanessa.
You need to come home before you make this worse.
A second message arrived.
We need to discuss Lily's behavior without her manipulating you.
Claire read Daniel's face.
"What did she say?"
He handed her the phone.
Claire's expression changed.
"Do not respond emotionally."
"I wasn't planning to."
"Good. Save everything."
Another message came.
I have records too.
Daniel stared at it.
"What records?"
Claire looked at the red box.
"We are about to find out."
The doorbell rang.
For one irrational second Daniel thought Vanessa had followed them.
It was the pizza delivery.
Lily came downstairs twenty minutes later in borrowed pajamas and wet hair.
She ate only half a slice.
Claire did not push her.
After dinner, Lily sat on the couch with a blanket around her knees.
"Aunt Claire, am I in trouble at school?"
Claire glanced at Daniel.
"Why would you be?"
"Vanessa said she talked to the school because I was getting difficult."
Daniel felt the room tilt.
"Who did she talk to?"
"I don't know."
Claire reached for a legal pad.
"Tell us everything you remember, but only if you want to."
Lily looked at Daniel.
He nodded.
"There is no wrong answer."
She started with small things.
Vanessa had canceled a sleepover and told Daniel Lily was tired.
She had returned a library book for Lily because she said the choice was inappropriate, though the book was an ordinary mystery novel.
She had changed Lily's after-school pickup twice without telling Daniel.
She had asked teachers to contact her first if Lily seemed emotional.
Then Lily mentioned something Daniel had never heard.
"She took me to Dr. Keller."
Daniel sat forward.
"Who is Dr. Keller?"
"A counselor."
Claire's pen stopped moving.
"When?"
"Twice."
Daniel's voice came out quiet.
"Vanessa took you to a counselor without telling me?"
Lily nodded.
"She said you asked her to."
Daniel looked at Claire.
Claire's face had gone completely still.
"Did you sign anything?"
"No."
"Did Vanessa?"
"I think so."
Daniel stood and walked to the window.
Outside, headlights moved through the dark street.
He suddenly understood Vanessa's message.
I have records too.
"She was building a paper trail," Claire said.
Daniel turned.
"For what?"
Claire chose her words carefully because Lily was still in the room.
"Possibly to support her version of what was happening at home."
Lily looked frightened.
"What version?"
Daniel came back and sat beside her.
"It doesn't matter yet."
Claire nodded.
"We will verify facts before we guess."
Daniel's phone rang.
Unknown number.
He answered.
"Mr. Whitmore? This is Dr. Samuel Keller."
Daniel and Claire stared at each other.
The counselor continued.
"Your wife called me and said there is a family emergency."
Daniel felt his pulse rise.
"What did she tell you?"
There was a pause.
"She said Lily had become unstable and that you removed her from the home during a conflict."
Lily heard every word.
Her face went white.
Daniel's anger returned with terrifying clarity.

Vanessa had begun telling her prepared story.
And she had started before they even reached Claire's house.
