Chapter 6 - The Behavior Plan.

Daniel sat on the edge of Lily's bed with the red box open between them.

He did not read the handwritten pages aloud.

He did not need to.

The headings were enough.

Phone access.

Meals.

Social invitations.

Chores.

Contact with father.

Reward conditions.

Daniel felt sick at the neatness of it.

It looked like a corporate project plan.

Not a family conversation.

Lily stood near the window hugging his suit jacket around herself.

"Did you know about that?"

"No."

"It has your work trips on it."

Daniel looked at the printed calendar.

Every business trip was highlighted in yellow.

Every late meeting was marked with a blue dot.

Several notes appeared beside dates when Daniel had been out of town.

Increase structure.

Reduce access to phone.

No sleepovers until compliance improves.

Daniel turned another page.

There were notes about Lily's friends.

Maya - encourages resistance.

Sophie - acceptable.

Mrs. Jenkins - teacher, potential interference.

Daniel stared at the list.

"Has Vanessa stopped you seeing Maya?"

Lily nodded.

"She said Maya was rude."

"When?"

"After Maya asked why I couldn't come to her birthday."

Daniel remembered that weekend.

Vanessa had told him Lily chose not to attend because she had too much homework.

He looked back at the paper.

A pattern was emerging.

Vanessa had not simply imposed chores.

She had been rewriting Lily's world and then explaining the changes to Daniel in ways that made them sound ordinary.

"Why didn't Maya text you?"

Lily gave a sad little laugh.

"She did."

Daniel looked at the disabled phone on the desk.

"Right."

He opened his own messages and searched Maya's mother's name.

There were no recent conversations.

Then he remembered Vanessa often answered the household tablet when parents contacted them.

"Did Vanessa ever use your school account?"

Lily nodded again.

"Sometimes."

Daniel closed the box.

"We're leaving the house tonight."

Lily looked alarmed.

"Where?"

"Your aunt Claire's."

Claire was Daniel's older sister, a family attorney who lived twenty minutes away.

She had never been especially close to Vanessa.

Daniel had once thought it was personality conflict.

Now he wondered what Claire had noticed before he did.

"Do I have to pack everything?"

"Just enough for a few days."

Lily stared at him.

"Are you and Vanessa getting divorced?"

The question landed harder than any accusation.

Daniel sat beside her.

"I don't know exactly what happens next."

He refused to lie simply to make the moment easier.

"But I know you are not staying here tonight."

Lily's shoulders dropped with visible relief.

That alone told him he was making the right decision.

While she packed, Daniel photographed every page in the red box.

He also took the notebook title sheet even though Lily's actual journal was missing.

Then he called Claire.

She answered immediately.

"You're calling before five, so either your meeting went well or something is wrong."

"Something is wrong."

His voice changed enough that she stopped joking.

"Is Lily safe?"

"She's with me."

"What happened?"

Daniel looked toward his daughter folding a sweatshirt into a small duffel.

"Can we stay with you tonight?"

Claire did not ask another question.

"Yes."

"I need you to see some documents."

"Bring everything."

A knock sounded against the open bedroom door.

Vanessa stood there.

She had changed out of the wine-red dress into cream trousers and a black sweater.

The transformation made her look less theatrical and more dangerous because she now seemed completely composed.

"Where are you going?"

Daniel stood.

"Claire's."

"You cannot take Lily and disappear because we had an argument."

"I am her father."

"And I am your wife."

"Those two facts are not competing."

Vanessa looked at the red box.

"You went through my private papers."

Daniel almost laughed.

"Your private papers about my daughter were hidden in my daughter's closet."

"Because I knew you would react exactly like this."

Lily stopped packing.

Daniel saw her watching them.

He kept his voice level.

"We are not having this conversation in front of her."

Vanessa turned to Lily.

"Tell your father you are fine."

Daniel stepped between them.

"Do not do that again."

"Do what?"

"Ask her to make you comfortable."

Vanessa's face hardened.

"You are making a terrible mistake."

Daniel picked up Lily's duffel.

"Maybe."

He lifted the red box under his other arm.

"But tonight, she sleeps somewhere she feels safe."

As they walked toward the stairs, Vanessa called after him.

"Daniel, if you leave now, don't expect this to stay private."

He stopped.

Lily did too.

Daniel turned slowly.

"What does that mean?"

Vanessa held his gaze.

"It means you should think about what people will believe when they hear the full story."

Daniel felt Lily's hand find his.

He squeezed it.

"Then they can hear the truth."

Vanessa's expression did not change.

"Which truth?"

May you like

Daniel stared at her.

For the first time, he realized she believed she had another version ready.
