Chapter 10 - Eight O'Clock.
Claire did not sleep that night.
At seven in the morning, she dressed Lily in a cream knit cap and wrapped her in the same blanket she had carried onto the frozen lawn.
Samuel offered to remain with the baby during the hearing.
Claire shook her head.
"Adrian keeps telling people Lily and I can be separated on paper."
She lifted the carrier.
"Today they see us together."
The hearing was held in a private family division conference room rather than a crowded courtroom.
Adrian arrived wearing a dark suit instead of his navy overcoat.
For one terrible second, he looked like the man Claire had married.
Then she remembered the recording waiting inside Evelyn's metal case.
Adrian's attorney argued first.
He described Adrian as a father seeking temporary stability while questions about the Harlow trust were resolved.
He said Claire had left the marital home suddenly and aligned herself with Samuel, a powerful businessman she had known for less than two days.
Miriam answered with dates.
The security system was disabled before Claire was expelled.
Confidential files were placed in her bag by Julian Voss.
The smart gate recorded Evelyn and Voss entering the property before the confrontation.
Rosa's sworn statement confirmed Adrian's instructions to staff.
Then Miriam placed a still image on the table.
It showed Claire on the frosted lawn holding Lily beside the broken crib.
The image came from the dashboard camera of a delivery driver who had stopped near the gate.
Adrian looked at it and said nothing.
The hearing officer asked him one question.
"Did you tell your wife to leave the residence with a twenty-eight-day-old child that night?"
Adrian's attorney began to answer.
The officer stopped him.
"I asked Mr. Mercer."
Adrian looked at Claire.
"Yes."
"Did you arrange safe transportation?"
"I believed she had somewhere to go."
Claire almost spoke, but Miriam touched her wrist.
The officer continued.
"Did she tell you she had somewhere to go?"
Adrian's face tightened.
"No."
His request for sole temporary financial authority over Lily was denied.
Claire felt relief move through her body so quickly she nearly cried.
Then Adrian's attorney placed a second document on the table.
"We have an existing parental authorization signed by Mrs. Mercer before Lily's birth."
Claire stared at the signature.
It was hers.
Unlike the Northbridge transfer, this one was real.
She remembered signing a stack of hospital and insurance documents at Adrian's study desk two weeks before delivery.
Miriam read the authorization carefully.
A paragraph on the final page granted Adrian authority to make certain financial decisions for their future child if Claire was medically unavailable.
The phrase medically unavailable had been crossed out.
Beside it appeared the typed words unavailable for any reason.
Claire shook her head.
"That wasn't there when I signed."
Adrian looked devastated rather than triumphant.
"Claire, you signed it."
"Not that version."
Miriam requested the notary log.
Adrian's attorney produced it.
The notary stamp appeared valid.
For the first time that morning, Miriam had no immediate answer.
The hearing officer declined to interpret the disputed authorization and referred the issue for expedited review later that day.
Adrian did not receive control.
But the document remained alive.
Outside the hearing room, he approached Claire alone.
Samuel moved forward.
Claire raised a hand.
She wanted to hear Adrian without anyone between them.
"You need to stop," he said.
"I need to stop?"
"Voss will destroy everyone to save himself."
"Then help expose him."
Adrian looked toward Lily.
For a moment, genuine pain crossed his face.
"I can't."
"Why?"
His answer was almost a whisper.
"Because the first forgery wasn't Voss's."
Claire's stomach dropped.
"Whose was it?"
Adrian looked at her.

"Mine."
Then he walked away before she could ask which document he meant.
