Chapter 2 - The Name No One Used.

For several seconds, the only sound on the lawn was Lily's quiet breathing beneath Chairman Harlow's coat.

Claire stared at the man in front of her as if one of them had stepped into the wrong life.

"Your granddaughter?"

Samuel Harlow looked at her with an expression that carried both relief and regret.

"Yes."

Adrian recovered first.

"Chairman, there must be some misunderstanding."

Samuel finally turned toward him.

"There is."

Adrian swallowed.

"I'm glad we agree."

"The misunderstanding," Samuel said, "is that you believed nobody would come when Claire called for help."

Claire tightened her hold on Lily.

"I didn't call you."

Samuel reached into his suit pocket and removed a folded piece of paper.

It was a photocopy of the Northbridge transfer request Claire had found that afternoon.

Her forged signature was circled in blue ink.

"Someone else did."

A second car stopped behind the first.

A woman in a dark wool coat stepped out carrying a slim leather case.

Claire recognized her instantly.

Miriam Holt had been her mother's attorney for more than twenty years.

Claire had not seen her since the funeral.

"Miriam?"

Miriam crossed the lawn and touched Claire's arm gently.

"Your mother made me promise that if certain documents ever surfaced, I would contact Samuel immediately."

Adrian's face tightened.

"This is a family disagreement."

"No," Miriam said.

"It became something else when Claire's name appeared on corporate documents she never authorized."

Evelyn stepped forward.

"You cannot stand on private property making accusations."

Samuel glanced at her necklace.

His eyes narrowed.

"Where did you get that?"

Evelyn covered the emerald with her hand.

"It belonged to my mother."

"What was her name?"

"Margaret Cross."

Samuel's expression did not change, but Miriam's did.

She opened her leather case.

"Claire, your mother's legal name was not Helen Ellis when she was born."

Claire shook her head slowly.

"What does that have to do with him?"

Samuel looked toward the mansion, then back at her.

"Your mother was Helena Harlow."

Claire stopped breathing for a moment.

"No."

"She was my daughter."

Adrian took a step backward.

Claire saw it.

Samuel saw it too.

"You knew something," Samuel said to Adrian.

"I knew Claire's mother had some old connection to the Harlow foundation," Adrian replied quickly.

Miriam gave a short, humorless laugh.

"You knew enough to build Northbridge Holdings around dormant Harlow family assets."

Claire turned toward Adrian.

"What did you do?"

"Nothing illegal."

"Then why is my signature on a transfer I never signed?"

Evelyn interrupted.

"Because you have been overwhelmed since the baby came."

Claire looked at her.

"That is the same sentence Adrian has repeated for weeks."

Samuel's jaw tightened.

He looked at the broken crib.

Then at the bag.

Then at Claire's thin clothes beneath his coat.

"You are coming with me tonight."

Claire hesitated.

"I don't even know you."

"You should have."

His voice softened.

"That failure belongs to me, not to you."

Miriam stepped closer.

"Claire, there is something else you need to know."

Adrian suddenly moved toward her.

"Miriam, don't."

Samuel stepped between them.

Miriam removed a sealed envelope from the case.

On the front, in Claire's mother's handwriting, were six words.

For Claire, when they come for Lily.

Claire looked down at her sleeping daughter.

"Who is they?"

May you like

Miriam met Adrian's eyes.

"That is what your mother died trying to find out."
