Chapter 3 - The Letter in the Winter Car.

Claire sat in the back of Samuel Harlow's sedan with Lily against her chest and the sealed envelope unopened in her lap.

The mansion remained visible through the rear window as the car moved down the long drive.

Adrian stood beneath the white columns with Evelyn beside him.

Neither waved.

Samuel sat across from Claire rather than beside her, leaving enough distance that she would not feel trapped.

Miriam occupied the front passenger seat.

"Why did my mother never tell me about you?" Claire asked.

Samuel looked toward the dark road.

"Because she believed distance would keep you safe from my name."

"Safe from what?"

"Money."

Claire almost laughed.

"Money doesn't usually chase people into the cold."

"Enough of it does."

Samuel explained that the Harlow family trust had been created decades earlier to keep control of several companies from being divided among opportunistic relatives and investors.

Helena had been Samuel's only child.

After a violent corporate scandal in her twenties, she left the public Harlow name behind and became Helen Ellis.

She raised Claire quietly and refused every attempt Samuel made to bring her back into the family business.

"She thought I cared more about protecting the company than protecting her," Samuel said.

"Was she wrong?"

Samuel did not answer immediately.

"Not then."

Claire appreciated the answer because it did not ask for forgiveness.

She opened the envelope.

Inside was a letter and a small brass key taped to the bottom edge.

Claire recognized her mother's handwriting immediately.

The first line made her eyes burn.

Claire, if you are reading this, someone has learned who Lily is before you have learned who you are.

Claire read the rest in silence.

Her mother wrote that certain Harlow trust rights would pass not to Claire, but to Claire's first child once the child was legally registered and thirty days old.

Lily was twenty-eight days old.

Claire looked up sharply.

"Two days."

Miriam nodded.

"At thirty days, Lily becomes the contingent beneficiary of a controlling block in Harlow Meridian."

"She's a baby."

"Which is exactly why someone may prefer to control the adult who controls her interests."

Claire thought of Adrian taking her phone.

Changing the passwords.

Telling relatives she was too tired for visitors.

Making her doubt simple conversations.

The pattern suddenly looked less like cruelty and more like preparation.

"He wanted me gone before Lily turned thirty days old."

Samuel's gaze hardened.

"That is one possibility."

Claire looked at the key.

A number had been engraved into it.

317.

Miriam turned around from the front seat.

"Your mother's letter says the key opens a deposit box at First Atlantic."

"What's inside?"

"She never told me."

Samuel's phone vibrated.

He read the screen and his expression changed.

"What?" Claire asked.

Samuel passed the phone to Miriam.

She read the message aloud.

"Northbridge Holdings just submitted an emergency petition claiming Claire abandoned the marital residence with Lily and removed confidential company property."

Claire stared at her.

"I was thrown out."

"I know."

"What confidential property?"

Miriam looked at the brown duffel bag now resting in the trunk behind them.

Claire followed her gaze.

The bag had been packed by Adrian's staff.

Claire had never opened it.

Samuel pressed the intercom button.

"Driver, pull over somewhere bright."

Five minutes later, beneath the lights of a closed garden center, Miriam opened the trunk.

Claire unzipped the duffel.

Her clothes were inside.

So were Lily's diapers.

Beneath them sat a black flash drive, three folders stamped CONFIDENTIAL, and a small velvet jewelry box.

Claire opened the box.

It was empty except for an indentation shaped exactly like Evelyn's emerald necklace.

Miriam looked at Samuel.

"They didn't just throw Claire out."

May you like

Samuel nodded.

"They packed the accusation with her."
