Chapter 8 - Room 814.

The Ashford Hotel kept financial archives longer than most guests realized.

Miriam obtained the old room record through a formal preservation request.

Room 814 had not been booked in Adrian's name.

It had been paid for by Voss Strategic Services.

Claire read the invoice without speaking.

The room had been reserved for three nights beginning the evening of the gala where she met Adrian.

Additional charges included a private meeting suite and two room-service dinners for three people.

"Three people," Claire said.

Miriam nodded.

"Adrian, Voss, and someone else."

Samuel's team recovered archived lobby footage from a backup vendor.

The image quality was poor, but the faces were clear enough.

Adrian entered first.

Voss followed.

The third person was Diane Cross.

Evelyn's mother.

Claire felt sick.

Her marriage had begun one floor above a meeting between the three people now tied to the false heir scheme.

"They chose me."

Samuel did not deny it.

Claire paced slowly so she would not wake Lily.

"Adrian approached me at the gala because Voss knew who my mother was."

"That appears likely," Miriam said.

"Then he married me."

"Yes."

"And waited for a child."

No one answered.

Claire hated the silence more than any reply.

She thought of Adrian painting the nursery.

Adrian crying when he first held Lily.

Adrian sleeping in a chair beside Claire during a difficult night after the delivery.

Could every tender moment have been strategy?

She refused to believe human beings were that simple.

Greed could coexist with affection.

Love could become corrupted.

The more complicated truth hurt more than the clean lie.

Marcus arrived with another discovery.

Diane Cross had died six months earlier.

Before her death, she had transferred ownership of Voss Strategic Services to Evelyn.

Evelyn was not a guest in Adrian's scheme.

She had inherited part of it.

"Can we prove she knows the heir claim is false?" Claire asked.

Miriam turned the red ledger toward her.

"Not yet."

The old birth record showed Diane as Evelyn's mother.

But Evelyn could argue Diane lied to her about Margaret.

Samuel looked at the emerald necklace in the photograph.

"The necklace can prove possession, not knowledge."

Claire stared at the image of Margaret wearing it.

"Unless my mother marked it."

Samuel looked at her.

Claire explained that Helen had a habit of scratching tiny initials inside valuable objects after a burglary when Claire was a child.

She called it making the truth too small for a thief to notice.

If Helen ever recovered the emerald, she might have marked it before it disappeared again.

Samuel remembered something.

After Margaret's death, Helena spent weeks cataloging her sister's belongings.

She would have handled the necklace.

Miriam immediately requested that the necklace be preserved as disputed trust evidence.

Evelyn's attorney responded within twenty minutes.

The necklace was unavailable.

Evelyn claimed it had been lost that morning.

Claire laughed once in disbelief.

"Of course it was."

Then Samuel's phone rang.

It was Marcus.

He had located Julian Voss.

Voss had checked into a private airport terminal under an alias and booked a flight leaving that night.

Samuel ordered his legal team to notify authorities about the evidence-preservation order.

But Marcus had one more detail.

Voss was not traveling alone.

Evelyn Cross was with him.

And the security image showed her carrying the same rectangular metal case seen in Adrian's service-gate footage.

Claire looked at the time.

The emergency board meeting was the next morning.

If Evelyn was leaving the country, the competing-heir presentation made no sense.

Unless she did not intend to attend.

Miriam understood at the same moment.

"Evelyn was never the heir they planned to put in control."

Claire's stomach tightened.

"Then who was?"

Samuel's gaze shifted toward Lily's crib beside the sofa.

"Someone who already has legal access to Lily."

May you like

Claire whispered the name.

"Adrian."
