Chapter 9 - The Heir Behind the Heir.
The answer changed the entire shape of the scheme.
Evelyn's false claim was useful only long enough to create confusion around the Harlow succession.
Adrian, as Lily's father, needed something different.
He needed control over the person who actually inherited.
Miriam pulled every filing Northbridge had made during the previous twenty-four hours.
Buried beneath the petition about Claire leaving the mansion was a request for temporary authority over Lily's financial interests.
Adrian claimed urgent action was necessary because unidentified third parties were trying to influence Claire.
"Third parties," Claire said.
"Meaning my grandfather."
Samuel's mouth tightened.
"Meaning anyone who stops him."
The request was scheduled for review at eight the next morning.
The Northbridge board meeting began at nine.
Miriam drew a line between the times on a legal pad.
"If Adrian receives even temporary authority at eight, he walks into the boardroom at nine claiming he can speak for Lily's interest."
Claire looked at Lily sleeping beside her.
"And then?"
Samuel opened the board agenda.
The final item proposed a merger between a Harlow Meridian subsidiary and Northbridge Holdings.
The transaction looked ordinary until Miriam found the voting provision.
If approved, it would transfer several long-held Harlow assets into a company where Adrian controlled the management rights.
"He doesn't need to own Lily's inheritance," Claire said slowly.
"He only needs to move it somewhere he controls."
Samuel nodded.
"Exactly."
At 6:17 p.m., Marcus called from the private airport terminal.
Evelyn had not boarded the plane.
She had walked away from Voss after receiving a message on her phone.
Voss disappeared through a service exit before the preservation order reached him.
Evelyn remained in a private lounge with an attorney.
She wanted to speak to Claire.
Samuel objected immediately.
Claire overruled him.
"I want to hear what she has to say."
The meeting took place by encrypted video with Miriam present.
Evelyn no longer looked smug.
Her red hair was loose, and the emerald necklace was gone from her neck.
"Adrian lied to me too," she said.
Claire felt no sympathy yet.
"You stood on my steps while he put my baby in the cold."
Evelyn lowered her eyes.
"I know."
"You told me the necklace belonged to your mother."
"Diane told me Margaret Harlow was my biological mother."
"Did you believe her?"
Evelyn hesitated too long.
"When I was younger."
"And later?"
Evelyn looked toward her attorney.
"Later, Voss told me it didn't matter what I believed."
She explained that Voss had promised she could force the Harlow family to recognize her claim.
Adrian would help establish the documentation.
In return, Evelyn would support the Northbridge merger once she gained a place in the trust dispute.
"Then why were you leaving tonight?" Miriam asked.
Evelyn held up her phone.
A message from Adrian appeared on the screen.
Your role is finished. Leave before the hearing or Voss will make you the only person responsible.
Claire read it twice.
Adrian had discarded Evelyn the same way he had discarded Claire.
Evelyn reached below the camera and lifted the rectangular metal case onto the table.
"Voss wanted this."
She opened it.
Inside lay the missing emerald necklace, the original amended birth record, and a microcassette in a clear plastic sleeve.
Claire leaned toward the screen.
"The recording from the crib."
Evelyn nodded.
"I took the case from Voss when I realized he planned to leave me with nothing."
Miriam asked the question Claire was afraid to ask.
"Have you listened to the tape?"
Evelyn's face changed.
"Only the first three minutes."
"What is on it?"
Evelyn looked directly at Claire.
"Your husband, four years ago."
Claire's fingers went cold.
"Saying what?"
