Chapter 12 - The Boardroom With No Windows.
Harlow Meridian's emergency board meeting took place in a windowless room thirty floors above the city.
Claire entered carrying Lily herself.
She wore the burgundy shirt from the night Adrian expelled her, not because she had no other clothes, but because she wanted him to remember exactly where the story had changed.
Samuel walked beside her in his blue suit.
Miriam carried the red ledger and the verified recording.
Adrian was already seated.
The navy overcoat hung across the back of his chair.
For the first time since Claire met him, he looked smaller than the room he occupied.
Julian Voss's seat was empty.
Evelyn's name appeared on a remote attendance screen, but her camera remained off.
The board secretary began with the question of succession.
Miriam presented the trust documents establishing Helena Harlow's line through Claire and Lily.
Samuel submitted historical records identifying Margaret Harlow and confirming that she had died without legally recognized children.
Evelyn's attorney then surprised everyone.
"My client withdraws any claim that Margaret Harlow was her mother."
A murmur moved around the table.
Evelyn's camera switched on.
She appeared pale but composed.
"My mother lied to me for years," she said.
"Later, I chose to repeat the lie because I thought it would make me powerful."
She removed the emerald necklace and held it toward the camera.
"It was never mine."
A jeweler appointed by the board had already inspected it that morning.
Inside the clasp were tiny scratched initials.
H.H.
Helena Harlow had marked the necklace after Margaret's death, exactly as Claire suspected.
Evelyn's claim collapsed in less than ten minutes.
Adrian remained silent.
Then the board reached the merger proposal.
Northbridge's attorney argued that the transaction would preserve jobs and stabilize both companies.
Samuel opposed it.
Several directors looked uncertain.
Northbridge was failing, but parts of its business were valuable.
Adrian finally spoke.
"I made changes to the parental authorization."
Every face turned toward him.
His attorney whispered urgently.
Adrian ignored him.
"Claire did not authorize those changes."
Claire felt no relief.
Confession did not restore trust.
Adrian continued.
He admitted he altered the document after Voss convinced him the Harlow trust could save Northbridge.
He also admitted he ordered Claire out when she discovered the transfer request.
But he denied planting the confidential files.
"Voss did that without telling me."
Evelyn laughed bitterly from the screen.
"You knew after he did it."
Adrian looked at her.
"Yes."
"And you left them in her bag."
"Yes."
Claire stared at him.
Each answer closed another door.
The board chair prepared to suspend the merger vote.
Then a director named Peter Lang stood up.
"Before we adjourn, there is one issue no one has addressed."
He distributed a document to every seat.
Claire looked down.
It was a purchase agreement dated three years earlier.
Northbridge Holdings had apparently bought a large block of Harlow Meridian voting rights from a private trust.
The signature authorizing the sale belonged to Helena Harlow.
Samuel frowned.
"Helena never sold those shares."
Peter Lang pointed to the notarization.
"Then we have a larger problem."
Miriam read the document and went very still.
The notary was the same person listed on Claire's altered parental authorization.
Adrian looked genuinely confused.
"I've never seen that agreement."
For once, Claire believed him.
Samuel leaned back slowly.
Voss had not simply manipulated Adrian and Evelyn.
He had been building his own path to Harlow Meridian for years.
Miriam looked at the purchase date again.
Then at Claire.
"Three years ago, your mother was already investigating this."
Claire remembered the final line in the red ledger.
SHE IS TRYING TO BUILD A SECOND HEIR.
Maybe Helen had not meant Diane.
