Chapter 14 - The Voice of Truth

On the third day of the trial, Lily was called to the stand. The courtroom fell utterly silent as the teenager walked past the defense table. Victoria stared at her, a silent, chilling attempt at intimidation, but Lily kept her eyes locked on the prosecutor.

After taking the oath, Lily began to speak. Her voice wavered slightly at first as she described the day she was taken. She spoke of the dark rooms, the isolation, and the constant threats that if she complained, she would never go home.

"Did the defendant ever offer you medical treatment, Lily?" the prosecutor asked gently.

"No," Lily answered, her voice finding its strength. "She only offered fear. She told me I was crazy and that no one would ever listen to me."

"And did anyone listen to you?"

Lily looked past the lawyers, past the judge, and met her mother’s eyes. A small, brave smile touched her lips. "My mother did. She always does."
