Chapter 18 - The Next Chapter
With the trial behind them, Sarah faced a crossroads in her career. The military had been her life for two decades, but the battle for her daughter had awakened a different kind of duty.
Sitting at the kitchen island, she slid a manila folder across the counter to Lily. "I'm officially retiring from active duty," Sarah announced.
Lily looked up, surprised. "What are you going to do?"
"During the trial, I realized how many families don't have the resources or the training to fight back against predatory systems," Sarah explained. "I’ve accepted a position as the director of a newly formed state oversight committee. We are going to audit private youth care facilities across the region. No more Victoria Sterlings."
