Chapter 5 - The Trap Springs

Sarah stepped out of the room just as the elevator doors chimed. Victoria Sterling strode down the white hallway, flanked by two burly men in dark suits. Her bright red suit was a beacon of arrogance.

Seeing her mother in the hall, Lily burst out of her room, clinging to Sarah’s arm. "They locked me away!" Lily screamed, genuine terror in her voice.

Victoria stopped, her face twisting with disdain. She pointed a manicured finger directly at the battered teenager. "Look at her," Victoria sneered to Sarah. "No one will believe her. She’s a hysterical, unstable child. I control the narratives in this town, Colonel. You are nothing here."

Sarah stood her ground, her posture rigid, her black-gloved hands steady. Two more figures quietly entered the far end of the hallway behind Sarah.

Sarah slowly reached into her pocket and pulled out her smartphone, which was synced to the hidden device in Lily’s pocket. She held it up, the screen glowing brightly with an active audio file.

"You threatened the wrong family," Sarah said, her voice dropping to a dangerous, icy calm.

Victoria scoffed. "You want me to fear a confession? We heard everything."

"Not you," a deep voice interrupted.

Detective Thorne and another state police officer stepped out from behind Sarah, holding up their badges. "We did," Thorne said. "We heard everything."

Sarah pressed play on her phone. Victoria’s own voice echoed off the sterile walls: "I control the narratives in this town, Colonel. You are nothing here."

The color drained entirely from Victoria’s face. Her mouth fell open in an exaggerated gasp of absolute, unadulterated shock, her eyes wide as the realization hit her: her untouchable empire had just collapsed.
