Chapter 10 - The Man Upstairs.

.Daniel thought he had misunderstood Detective Chen.

"What does that mean?"

Chen looked at the children sleeping upstairs on the monitor before answering.

"Your brother says Helena survived the initial crash."

Daniel sat down slowly.

The official report said Helena died at the scene.

Her vehicle had gone through a guardrail and landed in a ravine.

The car caught fire before emergency crews reached it.

Identification had been made through dental records and personal effects.

Daniel had never seen her body.

He had been advised not to.

Thomas told investigators a different story.

Helena had arranged to meet him at a roadside inn because she believed Simon and Adrian were altering the children's trust and using Daniel's electronic authorization without his knowledge.

She never reached the inn.

Thomas drove the route looking for her.

He found emergency vehicles near the ravine and assumed the worst.

Then, almost ninety minutes later, Helena called him from an unknown number.

Her voice was weak.

She said she had gotten out of the vehicle before it burned.

A passing driver had picked her up.

She told Thomas not to contact Daniel yet.

She believed Daniel's phone might be monitored.

Daniel's hands turned cold.

"Where was she?"

Thomas said Helena asked him to meet her at an abandoned gas station farther north.

He arrived twenty minutes later.

She was gone.

A dark sedan was pulling away.

Thomas followed it for several miles before losing it in heavy rain.

He called Helena repeatedly.

The number stopped working.

The next morning, police announced her death.

Thomas went to the authorities.

He told them about the call.

Simon Wren arrived before Thomas finished his statement.

Simon produced documents suggesting Helena had experienced severe paranoia and had made repeated claims that people were following her.

Thomas was furious.

The detective at the time treated his account as grief-driven speculation.

Then Thomas received an envelope containing photographs of his own daughter leaving school in Oregon.

There was no note.

He understood the warning.

He stopped pushing.

Daniel listened to the account over a secure call with his brother.

Thomas's face looked older, harder, and ashamed.

"I should have called you anyway."

Daniel could barely speak.

"I should have believed you five years ago."

Neither apology repaired anything.

But both mattered.

Thomas said Helena had mentioned one crucial item before disappearing.

A ledger.

She believed Adrian kept an offline record of money routed through shell companies connected to Simon's private family-services network.

If the ledger existed, it could tie the forged guardianship cases to financial theft.

"Where is it?"

"I don't know."

"Did Helena?"

"She said it was somewhere Adrian could reach without going through Mercer Systems."

Nora looked toward the ceiling.

"The estate."

Daniel understood immediately.

Adrian had access here for years.

The man who appeared on the basement camera had gone toward Daniel's study before the system went dark.

Maybe he had not come only to help move the children.

Maybe he had come to retrieve something.

Police searched Daniel's study again.

Behind a built-in panel near the fireplace, they found a narrow void containing a small safe.

Daniel had never installed it.

The safe was empty.

But dust on the shelf showed a rectangular object had been removed recently.

A black duffel bag would have carried it easily.

Caleb had seen Adrian carrying one.

Daniel remembered the runner escaping from the SUV and vanishing into the east woods.

Search teams were still looking.

Then Nora received a report from the estate's thermal perimeter sensors.

One sensor had remained functional because it ran on an independent hunting-monitor network installed by the previous owner.

It recorded a human heat signature entering the old greenhouse twenty minutes after the SUV stopped.

No signature had left.

The greenhouse stood two hundred yards east of the house.

Police surrounded it.

Daniel was ordered to remain inside.

He watched through a binocular feed from Nora's field tablet.

For six minutes, nothing moved.

Then an officer opened the rear greenhouse door.

A man stepped out with both hands visible.

Dark coat.

Mud on his trousers.

Blood on one sleeve from a shallow cut.

Adrian Cole.

Daniel felt no satisfaction.

Only betrayal made visible.

Adrian was brought into a police vehicle and taken away from the estate.

He requested an attorney immediately.

Hours later, however, his attorney contacted Detective Chen with an offer.

Adrian wanted to talk if prosecutors considered his cooperation.

Daniel was not allowed inside the interview room.

Chen later gave him only what she could legally share.

Adrian admitted creating the fake Manhattan meeting.

He admitted using Daniel's authentication prompts to attach signatures to documents Daniel never reviewed.

He admitted entering the house that night.

He admitted knowing the children would be moved.

He insisted he never agreed to harm them.

Daniel laughed without humor when Chen repeated that sentence.

"Men always discover a moral line after they are caught."

Chen did not disagree.

Adrian also claimed the black duffel contained a ledger he had removed from Daniel's hidden safe.

The ledger was no longer with him when police found him.

He said he buried it in the woods after hearing sirens.

A search team recovered it before sunrise.

Inside were years of coded payments.

Simon Wren's law firm.

Dr. Pike's clinic.

Private transport companies.

The Quebec property.

Several judges' campaign committees and charities appeared as well, though nothing yet proved corruption by those recipients.

Vanessa received regular payments long before she met Daniel socially.

Daniel looked at the ledger copy.

"She was paid to enter our lives."

Chen nodded.

"That is what Adrian claims."

"By Simon?"

"Yes."

Daniel waited for the rest.

Detective Chen hesitated.

"Adrian says Vanessa was not the person in charge."

"I know."

"He also says Simon wasn't either."

Daniel stared at her.

"Then who was?"

Chen slid a photograph across the table.

It came from the ledger's back pocket.

The picture showed Simon, Adrian, Vanessa, and Dr. Pike standing outside the Quebec cabin six years earlier.

A fifth person stood between them.

Daniel knew the face.

It belonged to his late father, Arthur Mercer.

Arthur had supposedly died seven years ago.

On the back of the photograph, someone had written a date.

The date was two years after Arthur's funeral.
