Chapter 12 - The Rescue That Wasn't.

.The official confirmation came the next afternoon.

The remains recovered near the Quebec cabin were Helena's.

Daniel read the report alone in his study.

He expected rage.

Instead, he felt a quiet so complete that he could hear the clock on the opposite wall.

For three years, he had mourned a death that happened in one place while the truth waited in another.

The investigators believed Helena survived the vehicle incident, contacted Thomas, and was intercepted before she could meet him.

Evidence from the cabin suggested she was held there again.

The exact circumstances of her death remained under investigation.

Daniel did not ask for details the detectives could not yet prove.

He had learned what happened when people filled uncertainty with stories convenient to them.

He would not do that to Helena again.

Caleb and Sophie were told only what a child therapist and Detective Chen believed they could safely hear.

Their mother had been hurt by people she had trusted.

She had tried to protect them.

The adults responsible were being investigated.

Caleb cried quietly.

Sophie asked one question.

"Did Mom think we forgot her?"

Daniel pulled her into his arms.

"Never."

He stayed with both children until they slept.

By morning, the case was already leaking into the public world.

A local news outlet reported police activity at the Mercer estate.

By noon, an anonymous source provided claims that Daniel had suffered a breakdown and that a domestic dispute involved questions about the children's welfare.

By three, an edited video appeared online.

It showed Daniel in the basement standing beside the metal cage.

The clip began after the children had been released.

It removed Vanessa from most of the frame.

It made Daniel appear to be pacing angrily beside an enclosure whose purpose was unexplained.

The caption claimed the billionaire security executive had built a private detention cage inside his home.

Daniel stared at the screen.

"Simon."

Nora agreed.

The hidden camera had recorded from an angle that made selective editing easy.

Vanessa's team had been preparing not only court evidence but public evidence.

Within hours, social media accounts repeated the story.

Some demanded Daniel's arrest.

Others asked why the children had been in a cage at all.

The genuine evidence was sealed inside an investigation, while the lie could travel freely.

Daniel wanted to release everything.

Detective Chen told him not to.

"If you dump evidence online, you give the people we're investigating a map of what we have."

Daniel hated her advice because it was correct.

Then the family court issued a temporary order.

Not the forged order Simon had created.

A real one.

Because of the public allegations, the active criminal investigation, and conflicting accusations between adults in the household, Caleb and Sophie were to remain under neutral protective supervision while interviews were completed.

Daniel felt as if the floor disappeared beneath him.

"You're taking them away from me because someone caged them while I was gone?"

Detective Chen remained calm.

"For a short period, at a secure child advocacy center."

"They were kidnapped from this house last night."

"Which is why the location will not be public."

Daniel looked at Nora.

She hated it too.

But challenging the order in the driveway would only feed the story already being built around him.

Daniel knelt in front of Caleb and Sophie before they left.

"This is not because you did anything wrong."

Caleb's mouth tightened.

"Are we coming back?"

"Yes."

"You promise?"

Daniel hesitated only because he had learned to respect promises.

Then he answered.

"I promise I will do everything legally possible to bring you home."

Sophie wrapped her arms around his neck.

"I liked it better when you just said yes."

Daniel almost broke.

A marked county vehicle arrived with two child-services specialists and a police escort.

Nora quietly checked every identification card herself.

The children left through the front drive.

Daniel watched until the vehicles disappeared beyond the gate.

Ten minutes later, Nora's phone rang.

She answered.

Her face changed.

"What?"

She put the call on speaker.

A county officer spoke rapidly.

"A second transport unit is behind us claiming a route change."

Nora looked at Daniel.

"There is no second unit."

The officer continued.

"They have county markings."

Daniel's pulse jumped.

"Do not stop."

The officer replied.

"We're not."

Nora opened the estate's external tracking interface and pulled the escort route.

A white van followed three car lengths behind the children's vehicle.

Its lights flashed.

A printed sign in the windshield read CHILD PROTECTIVE SERVICES.

Nora called state police dispatch directly.

The escort increased speed toward the nearest police substation.

The white van followed for another mile.

Then it turned sharply onto a side road.

State troopers intercepted it seven minutes later.

The vehicle was abandoned behind a closed garden center.

Its driver was gone.

Inside were two booster seats, two blankets, and a packet containing fresh photographs of Caleb and Sophie.

Daniel gripped the edge of the desk.

They had tried again less than twenty-four hours after the basement cage was discovered.

This was not panic.

It was persistence.

Detective Chen entered with another update.

Simon Wren had failed to appear for a scheduled interview.

His office was empty.

His home was empty.

His phone was off.

Vanessa remained in custody.

Adrian remained under guard.

Dr. Pike had been detained for questioning at an airport.

That left one person whose location remained unknown.

Arthur Mercer.

Nora placed the photograph of Arthur beside the map.

Daniel stared at the face of the father he had buried.

Then a security notification appeared on his phone.

The Mercer estate was still operating under lockdown logging.

Someone had just used an old master credential at the north service gate.

May you like

The credential name appeared on the screen.

ARTHUR MERCER.
