Chapter 4 - The Manhattan Lie.

.The black SUV should never have reached the inner drive.

The Mercer estate had two perimeter gates, a staffed checkpoint, and license-plate recognition that rejected every vehicle not entered into the household system.

Yet the SUV sat less than fifty yards from the house.

Daniel enlarged the snapshot.

Its plates had been covered with dark fabric.

The rear cargo area contained two small suitcases.

Nora spoke into her radio.

"South team, converge on service drive."

No answer came.

She tried again.

"South team, report."

Static.

Daniel looked at her.

"How many people are on duty?"

"Eight."

"Can someone interfere with the radios from inside?"

"Yes."

"Who knows how?"

Nora hesitated.

"Anyone who understands our internal security architecture."

Daniel did not need her to say Adrian Cole's name.

His CFO had helped fund the original system design.

He knew where redundancy ended and where human trust began.

Daniel pulled up his calendar.

The Manhattan board meeting that had sent him away that morning appeared exactly where it had been for weeks.

Mercer Systems Acquisition Review.

9:00 a.m. through 9:00 p.m.

He tapped the invitation history.

The meeting had been created by Adrian's executive assistant.

Daniel remembered arriving at the Manhattan office only to learn that two board members were ill and the lead investor had never confirmed attendance.

At the time, he had been irritated.

Now he understood.

The meeting had not simply failed.

It had been manufactured to keep him out of the house.

Vanessa watched him make the connection.

"Daniel, you are spiraling."

He looked at her.

"You knew exactly where I was supposed to be."

"You told me."

"You told me I was supposed to be in Manhattan before I said a word."

"Because you have been talking about that meeting for two weeks."

"That meeting never existed."

Vanessa blinked once.

It was barely noticeable.

Daniel saw it anyway.

Nora received a burst of radio noise.

Then a guard's voice came through.

"We have the SUV."

Nora answered immediately.

"Occupants?"

"Vehicle is empty."

"Search it, but do not move anything."

Daniel looked toward the stairs.

"I want the police here now."

Nora nodded.

"They were called eight minutes ago."

Daniel's phone rang before she finished.

The caller ID read SIMON WREN.

Vanessa closed her eyes for half a second.

Daniel answered on speaker.

"Daniel."

Simon sounded composed and almost bored.

"I have been trying to reach Vanessa."

Daniel looked directly at her.

"She is standing in my basement."

There was a small pause.

"I see."

Daniel's voice sharpened.

"Do you?"

Simon continued carefully.

"I am outside your front gate with a court liaison."

Daniel looked at Nora.

She checked a perimeter tablet connected to the cellular backup.

A sedan was indeed waiting at the main gate.

Simon spoke again.

"You need to let me in."

"No."

"Daniel, this is not optional."

"My children were locked in a cage."

Silence.

Vanessa stared at the floor.

Simon exhaled slowly.

"Then I strongly advise you not to say anything else on an unsecured line."

Daniel almost laughed.

"You're worried about the line?"

"I am worried about you."

"That's generous."

"Daniel, there is an emergency guardianship petition in effect tonight."

Daniel's body went still.

Nora turned toward him.

Simon continued.

"You signed the underlying consent package on Tuesday."

"I signed no such thing."

"You signed electronically."

"No."

"Your authentication token says otherwise."

Daniel remembered Tuesday afternoon.

He had approved a stack of acquisition documents from his office while Adrian stood beside him.

One packet had required repeated biometric confirmation because the signing portal kept timing out.

Daniel had complained about it.

Adrian had laughed and blamed the new software.

A feeling like ice moved through Daniel's chest.

Simon spoke softly.

"Under the order, Vanessa has temporary authority over the children's placement pending evaluation of your fitness."

Daniel looked at the empty cage.

"Placement?"

Vanessa finally raised her head.

"This is what I was trying to explain."

Daniel stared at her.

Simon continued through the phone.

"If you obstruct the order, you may make your situation substantially worse."

Nora muted the call for one second.

"Sir, he may be stalling."

Daniel nodded.

He unmuted.

"Simon, what court issued the order?"

Another pause.

"Family division."

"Which judge?"

Simon gave a name.

Daniel searched it on his phone.

The judge existed.

But the court's public calendar showed her chambers had closed at five.

The supposed emergency order carried a timestamp of 8:41 p.m.

Daniel opened the electronic signature certificate attached to the forged file from Sophie's memory card.

The document number matched the one Simon was referencing.

Daniel scrolled to the witness line.

The witness was Adrian Cole.

Daniel's anger became strangely calm.

"Simon."

"Yes?"

"You just quoted a document my daughter stole from a hidden camera before I told anyone it existed."

The line went silent.

Vanessa's eyes widened.

Nora unholstered her radio and moved toward the stairs.

Daniel continued.

"So either you are psychic, or you helped create it."

Simon ended the call.

At the same instant, every light in the basement went out.

Sophie screamed from upstairs.

Daniel ran toward the staircase.

The emergency system should have activated immediately.

It did not.

Nora reached the door first.

She pulled it open.

The hallway beyond was black.

May you like

Then a guard shouted from somewhere above them.

"The children are gone."
