Chapter 3 - The Camera Above the Door.

.The basement emergency light washed everyone's faces in a pale red glow.
Daniel refreshed the security app twice.
The same message remained on the screen.
LOCAL SERVER OFFLINE.
Nora was already speaking into her radio.
"Gatehouse, confirm perimeter."
A guard answered through static.
"All exterior gates remain sealed."
"Any movement?"
"Negative."
Daniel looked at Vanessa.
She had become strangely still.
"You knew this would happen."
"I have no idea what you're talking about."
Nora stepped closer to her.
"The server room is upstairs behind two coded doors."
Vanessa gave her a thin smile.
"Then perhaps your security isn't as impressive as you think."
Nora did not react.
Daniel felt Caleb's hand close around his sleeve.
"Dad, the man knew the code."
Daniel looked down.
"How do you know?"
"He told her he could turn the cameras off whenever she wanted."
Sophie nodded quickly.
"He said you wouldn't see anything until we were gone."
Nora's expression changed.
Only six people had permanent access to the central server room.
Daniel was one.
Nora was another.
The remaining four were senior employees of Mercer Systems.
Daniel had trusted each of them with his company, his home, and his children.
"Take Caleb and Sophie upstairs through the east service corridor."
Daniel looked at Nora.
"Put them in the library with two guards."
Caleb grabbed his arm tighter.
"No."
Daniel crouched to his height.
"You're safe now."
"No, Dad."
Caleb's eyes moved toward Vanessa.
"She said there were two people helping her."
Daniel looked over his shoulder.
Vanessa's face stayed blank.
Caleb lowered his voice.
"One man came down here."
"And the other?"
"I only heard him on the phone."
Daniel touched his son's shoulder.
"What did she call him?"
Caleb thought for a moment.
"Mr. Wren."
Daniel stopped breathing.
Nora heard the name too.
Her eyes met his.
Simon Wren had been the Mercer family's attorney for nearly twenty years.
He had handled Daniel's marriage to Helena.
He had drafted Helena's estate plan before her death.
He had reviewed Daniel's marriage agreement with Vanessa.
He had eaten Christmas dinner in this house six months earlier.
Vanessa finally spoke.
"A frightened child heard a name and now you're building a conspiracy."
Daniel stood.
"Don't speak about my son."
Nora escorted the children toward the stairs with one guard.
Sophie stopped beside Daniel.
She reached into the pocket of her pale cardigan.
Her small hand came out holding a black plastic memory card.
Daniel stared at it.
"What is that?"
"I took it from the little camera."
Vanessa's face changed so violently that Daniel almost missed it.
Sophie pointed toward the wall above the basement door.
A tiny camera no larger than a coin had been taped behind a ventilation grille.
It was not part of the Mercer security network.
Nora climbed one step and looked at it.
"That's not ours."
Sophie pressed the memory card into Daniel's palm.
"She kept moving the camera when we were in the cage."
Vanessa lunged forward.
"Give me that."
Nora caught her wrist before she reached Sophie.
Vanessa recoiled.
"Take your hands off me."
Nora released her immediately but stepped between Vanessa and the children.
Daniel closed his fist around the memory card.
Sophie whispered one more thing.
"She made us say things."
"What things?"
Sophie looked ashamed.
"That we hated living here."
Caleb spoke from the stairs.
"That Dad scared us."
Daniel felt colder than the basement floor.
Vanessa crossed her arms.
"You have no context."
Daniel stared at her.
"You put them in a cage and filmed them saying I frightened them."
"They were emotional exercises."
Nora actually looked at Vanessa in disbelief.
Daniel's voice became quiet.
"What were you planning to do with the videos?"
Vanessa did not answer.
Daniel turned to Nora.
"Get the children upstairs."
This time Caleb allowed himself to be led away.
Sophie looked back at Daniel until she disappeared through the doorway.
Daniel inserted the memory card into a small adapter attached to his phone.
Three folders appeared.
CALeb.
SOPHIE.
DANIEL.
His own name made him pause.
He opened the first folder.
A video showed Caleb sitting inside the cage earlier that evening.
Vanessa's voice came from behind the camera.
"Say your father loses his temper."
Caleb shook his head on the recording.
"I won't."
"Then you stay where you are."
The video ended.
Daniel opened another.
Sophie sat with her knees pulled to her chest.
Vanessa spoke again.
"Say you want to live somewhere else."
Sophie cried silently.
"No."
"Say it."
"No."
The recording cut off.
Daniel's hand trembled.
He opened the folder carrying his own name.
It contained documents rather than videos.
Scanned letters.
Medical forms.
Court filings.
A petition asking a judge to declare Daniel temporarily unfit to exercise custody of his children due to violent instability.
Daniel scrolled downward.
The petition was signed.
His signature appeared at the bottom of an attached psychiatric consent form.
He had never seen it before.
Nora stepped beside him.
"That's a forgery."
Daniel nodded once.
Then he saw the supporting statement.
It had been prepared by Simon Wren.
Vanessa watched him silently.
Daniel opened the metadata.
The files had been created three days earlier.
The author field listed a Mercer Systems laptop.
Not Vanessa's.
Not Simon's.
The laptop belonged to Adrian Cole, Daniel's chief financial officer.
A sound came from upstairs.
Something heavy struck the floor above them.
Nora reached for her radio.
Before she could speak, Daniel's phone received a single offline camera snapshot from the backup cellular system.
It showed the driveway.
A black SUV had appeared beside the service gate.

Its rear doors were open.
Inside were two child-sized travel seats.
