Chapter 5 - The Black SUV.

.Daniel hit the stairs hard enough that his knee struck the third step.
He did not feel it.
Sophie had screamed less than five seconds earlier.
Now the hallway above was empty.
The library door stood open.
One of the two guards assigned to the children was on the floor, conscious but dazed, holding the side of his head.
The second guard was nowhere in sight.
Daniel rushed inside.
Caleb's green hoodie lay beside the sofa.
Sophie's pale cardigan was on the rug.
The windows were closed.
The terrace doors were still electronically locked.
Nora knelt beside the injured guard.
"What happened?"
He blinked at her.
"Power dropped."
"Then what?"
"Someone came through the service door."
"Who?"
"I couldn't see."
Daniel looked at the narrow staff entrance at the back of the library.
It connected to an old service passage that ran behind the kitchens and opened near the garage.
The passage had no modern cameras because Daniel had once insisted the servants deserved at least one area of the house without surveillance.
The decision now felt like a knife.
Nora rose.
"Garage team, status."
A guard answered this time.
"Black SUV moving."
Daniel ran.
He crossed the kitchen, pushed through the service corridor, and burst through the mudroom door into cold rain.
The SUV's headlights flashed beyond the hedge.
It was rolling toward the inner service gate.
The gate remained closed.
Daniel could see a driver behind the wheel.
A second figure sat in the passenger seat.
He could not see the children.
Nora reached him a moment later.
"Do not approach the vehicle."
"My children may be inside."
"I know."
She lifted her radio.
"Block service drive with both security vehicles."
Two estate SUVs moved from opposite directions and stopped sideways across the narrow lane.
The black SUV slowed.
For a moment, Daniel thought the driver might ram them.
Instead, the passenger door opened.
A man jumped out and ran into the rain.
Nora pointed.
"East team, moving suspect."
The driver accelerated backward.
The SUV's tires spun on wet gravel.
Daniel saw movement behind the tinted rear glass.
A small hand struck the window once.
Sophie.
His chest seized.
"She's in there."
Nora saw it too.
"Gatehouse, hard seal."
Steel bollards rose from the drive behind the SUV.
The vehicle was trapped between the bollards and the security trucks.
The driver stopped.
For three seconds, nothing happened.
Then the rear door flew open.
Caleb jumped out first.
He stumbled onto the gravel and turned back.
Sophie appeared behind him.
The driver grabbed for her sleeve.
Caleb shoved the man's arm away.
Sophie fell to her knees outside the vehicle.
Daniel ran despite Nora shouting his name.
Caleb saw him.
"Dad!"
Daniel reached both children and pulled them behind one of the security vehicles.
Nora's team surrounded the SUV.
The driver raised his hands.
He was the missing estate guard.
Daniel recognized him immediately.
Miles Kerr had worked the south perimeter for eleven months.
Nora stared at him as if he had become a stranger.
"You."
Miles looked away.
"Get on the ground."
He obeyed.
Daniel crouched beside Caleb and Sophie.
"Are you hurt?"
Sophie shook her head but could not stop crying.
Caleb pointed toward the trees.
"The other man ran."
"Did you see his face?"
"No."
"Did you hear his voice?"
Caleb nodded.
"He was the man from the basement."
Daniel looked toward the dark property line.
The runner had disappeared into the wooded section between the estate and the east road.
Nora's teams were already searching.
Police sirens became audible beyond the main gate.
Daniel felt relief for the first time since entering the basement.
Then Sophie tugged his hand.
"Dad."
"Yes?"
"She put something in my backpack."
Daniel looked toward the SUV.
Both children's bags were visible in the rear cargo area.
Nora ordered an officer to retrieve them after photographs were taken.
Minutes later, Sophie's backpack was placed on the hood of a security vehicle.
Daniel opened it carefully.
Inside were clothes, cash, a toothbrush, and a sealed envelope.
The envelope carried his name.
DANIEL MERCER.
Nora photographed it before opening.
Inside was a typed letter.
Daniel read the first line.
By the time you read this, Caleb and Sophie will have left voluntarily.
The next paragraph claimed the children had become terrified of their father.
It said they had begged Vanessa to help them escape an unstable and controlling home.
It described Daniel as explosive, paranoid, and dangerous.
The letter ended with two typed names.
Caleb Mercer.
Sophie Mercer.
Below each name was a crooked imitation of the child's signature.
Daniel's hands shook.
Sophie looked at the page.
"She made us practice those."
Daniel closed his eyes.
"How many times?"
"A lot."
Caleb spoke quietly.
"She said if we got the letters right, we could come out of the cage."
Daniel looked at Vanessa, who had been brought outside under guard.
Rain ran down her hair and black dress.
For the first time, she looked less like the woman who had controlled his home and more like someone whose plan had cracked open.
Police vehicles entered the estate.
Daniel expected her to look frightened by them.
She did not.
She was staring at Sophie's backpack.
Daniel followed her gaze.
There was something else inside.
A small red passport wallet lay beneath the clothes.
He pulled it out.
It contained two new passports.
The photographs were Caleb and Sophie.
The names were not.
Caleb had become Colin Marlowe.
Sophie had become Sara Marlowe.
The issue dates were six weeks earlier.
Nora swore under her breath.
Daniel turned another page.
Tucked behind Sophie's false passport was a photograph of a lakeside cabin.
On the back, someone had written an address in Quebec.
Caleb stared at it.
"I've seen that place."
Daniel looked at him.
"Where?"
Caleb swallowed.
"On her laptop."
Vanessa shouted from across the drive.
"Caleb, stop."
Every officer turned toward her.
Caleb flinched.
Daniel put one hand on his son's shoulder.
"Keep talking."
Caleb pointed to the cabin.
"She said that's where kids go when nobody wants them anymore."
Daniel felt Sophie's fingers close around his.

Then Caleb said the sentence that changed the entire investigation.
"She said Mom was there first."
