Chapter 9 - The Second Room.

.The second room beneath the Quebec cabin was smaller than the first.

Its walls were painted a cheerful yellow that made the photographs more disturbing rather than less.

Two narrow beds sat against opposite walls.

There were children's books on a shelf.

A plastic table stood in the center.

The door locked from the outside.

On the inside wall, pencil marks measured height at different dates.

None belonged to Caleb or Sophie.

Daniel stared at the photographs on Detective Chen's tablet.

"Whose children were there?"

"We don't know yet."

The oldest marks were six years old.

That meant the room existed before Vanessa married Daniel.

It existed before Helena died.

This was no plan created around one family.

It was infrastructure.

Canadian police recovered boxes of documents from a concealed storage space beneath the stairs.

Many were incomplete.

Some referenced private guardianship disputes.

Others appeared to be intake notes for wealthy families dealing with inheritance conflicts, custody battles, or relatives described as unstable.

The same three names appeared repeatedly.

Simon Wren.

Adrian Cole.

Dr. Lawrence Pike.

Vanessa's name appeared later.

Daniel felt nauseated.

Detective Chen chose her words carefully.

"We may be looking at a long-running scheme that used legal and psychological paperwork to isolate people from their families."

Daniel thought of Helena's carving.

NO ONE.

Maybe she had not meant trust no one in the world.

Maybe she had meant no one in the system around her.

Nora entered the library with an update.

Police had located Ruth Bell.

She had been living under her sister's name in a small town in Maine.

She had not disappeared voluntarily.

After leaving the Mercer estate, someone had followed her for weeks.

Her apartment had been broken into twice.

She changed her number, sold her home, and stopped contacting Daniel because she believed doing so would put Caleb and Sophie in greater danger.

Ruth agreed to speak by secure video.

Her face appeared on Nora's laptop thirty minutes later.

She looked older than Daniel remembered.

When she saw him, she began crying before either of them spoke.

"Mr. Mercer."

Daniel swallowed.

"Ruth, I'm sorry."

She shook her head.

"No, sir."

"I should have called you."

"I should have stood in your driveway until you listened."

Daniel leaned closer to the screen.

"Tell me what happened."

Ruth described Helena's last months.

Helena had become convinced that someone was manipulating the children's trust.

Simon repeatedly brought papers for her signature.

When she refused, Dr. Pike began suggesting she was experiencing anxiety and fixation.

Adrian contacted her privately about moving assets for safety.

Then Vanessa appeared.

At the time, Vanessa was not Daniel's partner.

She worked as a consultant for a private family-services company recommended by Simon.

Her official job was to help reduce stress in high-conflict households.

Helena hated her immediately.

"She watched Mrs. Mercer like a guard watches a door."

Daniel's stomach tightened.

"Why didn't Helena tell me everything?"

Ruth's eyes filled.

"She tried."

Daniel looked away.

Ruth continued.

"But every time she told you someone was following her, Mr. Wren had already told you she was exhausted."

"Every time she questioned a document, Mr. Cole told you she was worried about money."

"And every time she became angry, Dr. Pike called the anger evidence."

Daniel felt the cruelty of the design.

They had turned Helena's accurate fear into proof that she could not be trusted.

Ruth said the Quebec cabin had been presented as a wellness retreat.

Helena went because Simon told her Daniel had agreed.

Daniel had never heard of it.

When Helena returned, she told Ruth she had been locked in a downstairs room for almost two days.

She was terrified to go to police because Simon had shown her signed documents describing the stay as voluntary.

"Did she sign them?"

"No."

Ruth's answer came immediately.

Daniel looked at the forged papers spread across his own table.

The same method.

The same signatures.

The same lie.

"Why did she drive to Vermont?"

Ruth hesitated.

"She said she was going to meet someone who could prove the documents were fake."

"Who?"

"I don't know."

"Did Vanessa know?"

Ruth's face changed.

"I think so."

She described seeing Vanessa in the garage the night before Helena left.

Adrian arrived twenty minutes later.

Simon appeared after ten.

Ruth heard an argument through the closed service door.

She could not make out every word.

One sentence stayed with her.

A man's voice said, "If she reaches him first, we're finished."

Daniel's pulse quickened.

"Reaches who?"

"I never knew."

Detective Chen leaned toward the laptop.

"Ms. Bell, did Helena mention the name of the person she planned to meet?"

Ruth thought for a long moment.

"She called him Thomas once."

Daniel frowned.

He knew only one Thomas connected closely enough to the family to matter.

Thomas Mercer.

His older brother.

Daniel had not spoken to him in five years.

Their relationship ended after a brutal dispute over their father's company.

Thomas had accused Adrian of hiding losses and Simon of protecting him.

Daniel had defended both men.

Thomas left the board and moved to Oregon.

At Helena's funeral, he never appeared.

Daniel had assumed bitterness kept him away.

Now Detective Chen searched a national database.

Thomas Mercer's driver records showed he had been in Vermont the week Helena died.

Nora found an archived hotel charge placing him seventeen miles from the crash site.

Daniel stared at the screen.

"My brother was there."

Detective Chen's phone rang.

She answered and listened without speaking.

When she ended the call, her expression had become grave.

"Daniel, officers just reached Thomas Mercer."

Daniel stood.

"What did he say?"

"He says Helena called him for help."

Daniel waited.

"He also says she never died where the police report says she did."
