Chapter 8 - The Missing Hour.

.Adrian Cole had worked beside Daniel for twelve years.

He had been at Helena's funeral.

He had carried Sophie's sleeping body from the church to the car because Daniel's hands would not stop shaking.

He had stood beside Daniel three days later and promised that Mercer Systems would survive while Daniel stayed home with the children.

Now a still image placed Adrian in Daniel's garage beside Vanessa hours before Helena's final trip.

Daniel looked at the photograph until his vision hurt.

Detective Chen returned before dawn.

"Mr. Cole is missing."

Daniel did not react outwardly.

"When was he last seen?"

"He left the Manhattan office shortly after your canceled meeting."

"Vehicle?"

"Found near Penn Station."

"Phone?"

"Off."

Nora placed a map on the library table.

The man who fled the black SUV had disappeared through the east woods toward a county road.

A traffic camera twenty minutes later caught a figure entering a dark sedan.

The sedan was registered to a shell company used by Mercer Systems for executive transport.

Adrian had authority over that fleet.

Daniel rubbed both hands over his face.

"So he created the Manhattan meeting, helped forge the documents, entered my house, and tried to move my children."

Detective Chen remained careful.

"We can prove pieces of that."

"I watched him on my own camera."

"We can prove he was present."

Daniel understood the distinction.

He hated it anyway.

The forensic team began reviewing Helena's flash drive.

Most of the files were ordinary photographs, copies of trust documents, and recordings of conversations Helena had apparently made because she no longer trusted the people around her.

One folder was titled THE HOUR.

Inside was a spreadsheet comparing the Mercer estate's security logs from the night before Helena died.

Daniel recognized the data structure immediately.

Helena had spent years married to the founder of a security company.

She knew enough about the system to notice when something was wrong.

Between 10:14 p.m. and 11:15 p.m. that night, every interior camera archive was blank.

Sixty-one minutes.

The official maintenance record claimed a software update.

The update ticket had been approved by Adrian.

Nora searched the raw server logs stored at Mercer Systems.

Those logs showed no software update at all.

Someone had manually disabled recording while leaving the live feeds active.

Daniel remembered that night.

He had been upstairs reading a contract.

Helena had come into his office at approximately ten.

She had asked whether he still trusted Simon Wren.

Daniel had laughed because the question seemed absurd.

Simon had been his father's attorney before becoming his.

Helena had not laughed.

She had asked whether Daniel had personally reviewed the latest amendment to the children's trust.

He told her Simon handled those details.

Helena became angry.

Daniel became defensive.

They argued.

She left the room.

Daniel stayed at his desk because he believed finishing the contract was more important than following his wife down the hall.

The memory now made him sick.

Detective Chen played an audio file from Helena's drive.

Helena's voice filled the library.

"If anything happens to me, Daniel will think it was an accident."

Daniel stared at the speaker.

"He trusts people because he thinks loyalty can be measured by years."

Her voice shook slightly.

"Vanessa has been following me."

"Adrian has accessed accounts he has no reason to access."

"And Simon keeps changing language in the children's trust after I reject it."

The recording stopped.

Daniel could not speak.

Caleb and Sophie were asleep upstairs under police protection, which was the only reason he allowed himself to break.

He leaned forward with both hands over his face.

Nora stood quietly beside him.

Detective Chen gave him a minute before continuing.

"There is more."

Another file contained a photograph of a handwritten note from Helena.

It described being taken to a cabin in Quebec for what Simon called a private intervention.

Helena wrote that she had agreed to go because Simon convinced her Daniel believed she was becoming paranoid.

Once there, her phone was taken.

She was told to rest for several days.

Helena wrote that Vanessa arrived the second night.

She also wrote one sentence in capital letters.

DANIEL DOES NOT KNOW I AM HERE.

That explained the carving in the wall.

Daniel's hands clenched.

"How did she get out?"

Detective Chen turned the page.

"She says a housekeeper at the property helped her reach a road."

"Then why didn't she go to police?"

"She wrote that Simon convinced her the confinement would be described as voluntary treatment and that he had documents showing she consented."

The pattern was unmistakable.

They had tried the same strategy on Helena that they were now using against Daniel.

Paperwork first.

Isolation second.

A story about instability third.

Daniel felt a cold clarity settle over him.

"The cage wasn't an improvisation."

"No."

Nora looked toward the dark windows.

"They have been rehearsing this kind of control for years."

The final video in THE HOUR folder had no image.

Only sound.

Helena had apparently left a recorder running in her dressing room.

At 10:37 p.m., Vanessa's voice was audible.

"We cannot keep doing this while he is in the house."

Adrian answered.

"Then get her on the road tomorrow."

A third voice spoke from farther away.

Daniel leaned toward the speaker.

It was muffled, but he knew the cadence.

Simon Wren.

"The trust has to be clean before anything happens."

Helena's recorder captured a door closing.

Then silence.

Detective Chen stopped playback.

Daniel looked at the timestamp.

10:42 p.m.

His security log from the same minute recorded Simon Wren entering the property.

But Simon had told police after Helena's death that he had not seen her for more than a week.

Nora's phone buzzed.

She read the message.

Her face tightened.

"Canadian investigators opened the lower section of the cabin."

Daniel waited.

"They found another room."

"What kind of room?"

May you like

Nora looked at Detective Chen before answering.

"One built for children."
