Chapter 11: The Hidden Drawer

A heavy rain battered the windows of the Sterling Manor on a quiet Tuesday evening, a stark contrast to the warmth radiating from the fireplace in the main study. Arthur Vance sat across from Sarah and Lily, his ubiquitous leather briefcase resting on the antique coffee table.
"The final transfer of the custodial accounts is complete," Arthur announced, handing Sarah a stack of neatly tabbed documents to sign. "Victoria’s legal ties to the estate are officially severed. She has relocated to a small apartment in a neighboring state, and per the restraining order, she is barred from contacting either of you."
Lily exhaled, sinking deeper into the oversized armchair. The nightmare was truly over on paper.
"There is, however, one more thing," Arthur said, his professional demeanor softening. He reached into his briefcase and pulled out a small, mahogany box adorned with intricate brass inlay. "When the movers were clearing out Victoria’s vanity desk, one of the drawers jammed. It turned out to be a false bottom."
He slid the box across the table toward Lily. "This was inside. It belongs to you."
Lily’s breath hitched. She recognized the box immediately. It was the one her father used to keep on his nightstand, the one he said held his most prized possessions. Victoria had claimed it was lost during the funeral arrangements.
With trembling fingers, Lily undid the brass latch and opened the lid.
Inside was a collection of unsent letters, their envelopes addressed to Sarah in Seattle. There were also a dozen polaroid photographs of Lily and her father—laughing in the greenhouse, building a snowman, eating ice cream on the porch. Victoria had systematically hidden every piece of joy and connection from the house.
But beneath the photographs was a thick, cream-colored envelope with Lily’s name written in her father’s elegant script.
"He wrote that a week before his heart failed," Arthur said softly. "I knew it existed, but Victoria swore she had given it to you. I should have known better."
Lily opened the envelope, pulling out the folded letter.
My dearest Lily,
If you are reading this, it means I am no longer there to hold your hand. I am so sorry, my brave girl. The doctors tell me my time is short, but I need you to know that my love for you is endless.
Do not let grief harden your heart. You have a light inside you that is brighter than any darkness the world can offer. Trust your Aunt Sarah, trust Arthur, but most importantly, trust yourself. You are a Sterling, but more than that, you are my daughter. Kind, brilliant, and unbreakable.
Keep growing, my beautiful flower.
May you like
Love always, Dad.
Tears fell freely down Lily's cheeks, spotting the ink on the page. But they were healing tears, washing away the last lingering shadows of doubt Victoria had planted in her mind. She pressed the letter to her chest, closing her eyes. Her father was gone, but his words had finally found her.
