Chapter 5: The Reading of the Trust

The morning light filtering into the manor’s grand library felt different than it had the day before. It felt warmer, breaking through the dusty stillness that had haunted the house since Lily’s father had passed away.

Lily sat on a plush leather sofa, clutching a mug of hot cocoa that the head housekeeper, Mrs. Gable, had made for her. Mrs. Gable had hugged Lily crying that morning, finally free to express the affection she had been forced to hide under Victoria's tyrannical rule.

Across the mahogany coffee table sat Arthur Vance, his briefcase open, meticulously organizing a stack of legal documents.

To everyone's surprise, Victoria was also present, sitting rigidly in a high-backed armchair. She had posted bail in the early hours of the morning. Her glamorous red gown was gone, replaced by a stark, wrinkled charcoal suit. Her eyes were bloodshot, her makeup smudged, and she refused to look at Lily. She had brought her own attorney, a nervous-looking man who kept dabbing his forehead with a handkerchief.

"Let us make this brief," Arthur began, adjusting his glasses. "We were scheduled today to finalize the transition of the Sterling estate into Victoria's sole control, based on her claims that Lily was a troubled, delinquent child unfit to inherit, and required specialized boarding school care."

Victoria scoffed, looking away.

"However," Arthur continued, his tone hardening, "the terms of Richard Sterling’s trust were explicitly clear. Victoria was only to act as the custodian of the estate and Lily’s guardian provided she maintained a safe, nurturing, and moral environment. In light of last night’s events—which, I will remind you, were witnessed by half the city's municipal leaders and recorded on high-definition video—that clause has been unequivocally violated."

"This is absurd," Victoria’s lawyer squeaked. "My client made a mistake under immense stress—"

"Your client struck a child and attempted to frame her for a felony," Arthur interrupted sharply. "The board of trustees met for an emergency session at 7:00 AM. Victoria has been entirely stripped of her guardianship and her position as executor of the estate."

Victoria’s head snapped back around. "You can't do that! Richard left me this house!"

"Richard left this house to his daughter," Arthur corrected, tapping the thick document on the table. "He left you a generous stipend, which, unfortunately for you, has a morality clause. A clause you triggered the moment you were arrested last night."

Lily watched in quiet awe as the woman who had terrorized her for a year shrank into her chair. The immense, terrifying dragon that had guarded the gilded cage was suddenly revealed to be nothing more than a shadow.

"You have until noon to pack your personal belongings and vacate the premises, Victoria," Arthur said with absolute finality. "If you are not gone by then, I will have Marcus and the police escort you out."
