Chapter 8: Whispers in the Hallways

Returning to Oakridge Academy was entirely different from what Lily had anticipated. Before the Winter Gala, she had been a ghost in the hallways of the elite private school. Victoria’s rumors had seeped even into the classroom, painting Lily as a troubled, deceitful child. Parents had whispered to their children to keep their distance, and Lily had spent her lunch periods hiding in the library.

But high society thrives on scandal, and the dramatic implosion of Victoria Sterling was the only thing anyone in the city could talk about.

On Monday morning, Lily walked through the double doors of the academy with a newfound posture. She wasn't slouching to make herself invisible anymore. Aunt Sarah had driven her to school, given her a pep talk in the parking lot, and packed a slightly squished but deeply appreciated peanut butter and jelly sandwich in her lunchbox.

As Lily walked down the main corridor toward her locker, the chatter around her noticeably dipped. She could feel the weight of a dozen stares.

"Is it true?" a voice asked.

Lily turned to see Chloe, a girl who used to be her lab partner before Victoria had forbidden Lily from having friends over. Chloe looked nervous, her hands clutching her binder tightly to her chest.

"Is what true?" Lily asked evenly.

"That your stepmom got arrested in the middle of your ballroom? My mom said she tried to plant the Sterling Diamonds on you to send you to juvenile detention."

A small crowd had subtly gathered, eager for firsthand confirmation of the gossip. In the past, being the center of attention would have sent Lily into a panic. But the girl who had stared down Victoria Sterling in front of a hundred screaming adults was no longer afraid of a few middle schoolers.

"Yes," Lily said, her voice clear and steady. "She tried to frame me because she wanted my father's money. But the security cameras caught her doing it. She's gone now."

A collective murmur of awe rippled through the onlookers.

"That is the most insane thing I've ever heard," Chloe breathed, her eyes wide. She hesitated for a moment before offering a small, apologetic smile. "Do you... want to sit together at lunch today? I missed you in science class."

Lily felt a genuine smile tug at the corners of her mouth. "I'd like that, Chloe."

As she spun the dial on her combination lock, Lily realized that the truth had done more than just save her from Victoria's trap; it had set her free from the shadow she had been forced to live in. She wasn't the tragic orphan anymore. She was simply Lily again.
