Chapter 3: The Revelation

Lily stumbled back, clutching her cheek. A bright red welt instantly began to bloom across her pale skin. Tears spilled over her eyelashes, but she didn't fall.
"Look at her face," Victoria spat, turning to the shocked crowd of onlookers. "She knows she's guilty!"
"I didn't do anything!" Lily cried, her voice cracking but ringing clear in the silent room. "I never touched your jewelry!"
Victoria sneered, stepping closer, her red dress shimmering like spilled blood under the chandeliers. "Search her things! Search her!" she demanded, addressing the security guards who were now rushing into the room. "Everyone needs to see what she really is. A thief. A troubled, ungrateful thief!"
Lily looked around at the faces of the guests. They were staring at her with pity, suspicion, and disgust. Victoria had almost won. She was about to ruin Lily’s life forever. But as Lily backed away, her foot brushed against the cold metal of the necklace on the floor. She looked down, then looked up, her eyes catching the small, blinking red light of the security camera mounted directly above the grand staircase.
A sudden, fierce clarity washed over the young girl. She remembered Marcus, the kind young man who ran the estate's security and AV systems, telling her that the new cameras caught absolutely everything in high definition.
"No," Lily said, her voice dropping an octave, finding a strength she didn't know she possessed. She lowered her hand from her bruised cheek. "Everyone needs to see what really happened."
She turned and pointed a shaking finger toward the massive flat-screen television on the far wall, which was currently displaying a looping slideshow of the Sterling estate.
Up in the control booth, Marcus had seen the entire exchange. Having grown tired of Victoria's relentless cruelty toward the girl, he didn't hesitate. With the press of a button, the slideshow vanished.
The screen flickered to a crystal-clear, black-and-white feed from just moments ago. The entire ballroom watched in breathless silence as the giant screen showed Victoria purposefully unhooking her necklace, kneeling down, and sliding the diamonds right at Lily's feet.
A collective gasp ripped through the room.
"Oh my god," a woman in the front row whispered, covering her mouth in horror.
"She planted it," a man muttered, his voice carrying through the deadly quiet ballroom.
Victoria’s face drained of color. The confident, cruel matriarch suddenly looked small and terrified. She opened her mouth to speak, but no words came out.

Lily stepped forward, looking directly up into Victoria's panicked eyes. The tears were still falling, but she held her head high.
"You made everyone believe I was a thief," Lily said, her voice echoing in the vast space, "because you were afraid of the truth. You were afraid everyone would figure out that you're the only fraud in this house."
