Chapter 15: The Summer Gala

As autumn approached, the calendar crept closer to the one-year anniversary of the fateful Winter Gala.

Historically, the Sterling galas were stiff, joyless affairs designed purely for networking and flaunting wealth. But Lily didn't want the anniversary of her darkest night to loom over the house like a ghost. She wanted to reclaim it.

"We should throw a party," Lily announced one evening over dinner. "Not a stuffy one with tuxedos and caviar. A real party. A garden party to celebrate the greenhouse and the end of summer."

Sarah’s face lit up. "I love that idea. We could string fairy lights through the trees and have a barbecue."

"And we can invite the people who actually matter," Arthur added, taking a sip of his wine. "The neighbors, your school friends, the estate staff."

The planning became a joyous, chaotic family affair. Mrs. Gable took charge of the menu, ditching the pretentious hors d'oeuvres for gourmet burgers, fresh salads, and a massive chocolate cake. Marcus wired the entire backyard with warm, glowing string lights and set up a sound system that played upbeat, soulful music instead of the dreary classical quartets Victoria had preferred.

When the day of the party arrived, the Sterling estate felt alive in a way it never had before.

The manicured lawns were dotted with picnic blankets and lawn chairs. Chloe and a group of friends from school were playing badminton near the rose bushes. Arthur was manning the grill, laughing as Marcus tried to teach him how to achieve the perfect sear on a burger. Sarah was giving tours of the blooming greenhouse to impressed neighbors.

Lily wore a simple, flowing yellow sundress. She walked through the crowd, feeling the warmth of the late afternoon sun on her face. There were no whispers, no judging stares, no rigid rules to follow. Just laughter and genuine connection.

As the sun began to set, painting the sky in brilliant strokes of pink and orange, Arthur tapped his tongs against a glass to get everyone’s attention.

"If I could have a moment," Arthur called out over the chatter. The yard quieted down, faces turning toward the patio. "A year ago, this house went through a profound change. It was a difficult transition, but looking around tonight, I can confidently say it was a necessary one. This estate is finally a home again."

He raised his glass, looking directly at Lily. "To Lily. The strongest, brightest young woman I have the privilege of knowing."

"To Lily!" the crowd echoed, raising their cups.

Lily felt a blush creep up her cheeks, but she didn't look away. She stepped forward, standing next to Arthur and Sarah.

"Thank you," Lily said, her voice carrying clearly across the lawn. "Thank you all for being here. My dad used to say that a garden can only thrive if it has good soil, plenty of light, and people who care enough to tend to it."

She looked at Sarah, at Arthur, at Marcus and Mrs. Gable, and at Chloe.

"For a long time, this place was in the dark," Lily continued, a soft smile on her lips. "But you all brought the light back. You are my family, and I am so incredibly grateful for you. So, welcome to our home."

The yard erupted in cheers and applause. The music swelled back up, and the string lights flickered on, casting a warm, golden glow over the celebration.

Lily looked toward the greenhouse, its glass panes reflecting the fairy lights like a thousand tiny stars. The cage was gone, the heavy doors were open, and the flowers were in full bloom.

She was exactly where she was meant to be.
