Chapter 12: A Normal Tuesday

Spring arrived in the city not with a whisper, but with an explosion of color. The snow melted, giving way to bright green lawns and blooming cherry blossoms along the avenues.
Inside the greenhouse of the Sterling Manor, the transformation was nothing short of miraculous. The empty planter boxes were now overflowing with vibrant hydrangeas, trailing pothos, and delicate, temperamental orchids that Lily had learned to coax into blooming. The resilient little sprout from the winter had grown into a sturdy, flowering jasmine plant, filling the humid air with a sweet, intoxicating scent.
"Okay, this is actually incredible," Chloe said, her eyes wide as she stepped into the greenhouse. She dropped her heavy backpack onto a wrought-iron chair. "You literally have a jungle in your backyard."
"It’s a work in progress," Lily laughed, handing Chloe a watering can. "But it's getting there. Come on, we need to finish our biology project before Aunt Sarah orders pizza."
It was a perfectly normal Tuesday afternoon. Six months ago, the idea of having a friend over to do homework in her father's greenhouse would have felt like an impossible fantasy. Now, it was just her life.
As they arranged their notes on the rustic wooden table, Chloe looked up. "Hey, did you hear about the spring talent show? A bunch of people in our grade are putting together a skit. They asked if you wanted to help with the set design, since you're so good at art."
Lily paused, a pencil hovering over her notebook. The old instinct to hide, to avoid drawing attention, flickered briefly in her mind. But she looked around at the thriving plants, at the glass walls that no longer trapped her, but protected her while she grew.
"Yeah," Lily smiled, a genuine, confident expression. "I'd love to help."
Later that evening, after Chloe had gone home and the pizza boxes were cleared away, Lily walked back out to the greenhouse alone. She carried her father’s leather journal in one hand and a pen in the other.

She found the page where he had written about her gentle touch and strong spirit. Right beneath his final entry, Lily uncapped her pen and added her own.
We fixed the greenhouse, Dad. The orchids bloomed today. And so did I.
