Chapter 4: The House of Cards

The silence in the ballroom shattered, replaced by a deafening roar of overlapping voices. The high-society guests, who just moments ago had looked at Lily with disdain, now turned their collective shock and outrage toward Victoria.
"Turn that off!" Victoria shrieked, her poise entirely abandoned as she pointed a trembling finger at the giant screen. "It’s doctored! That’s a fake video! The security boy has always hated me!"
But the black-and-white loop played on, an undeniable, damning cycle of her bending down and slipping the heavy diamond necklace beneath the hem of her stepdaughter's dress.
A tall, distinguished man pushed his way to the front of the crowd. It was Arthur Vance, the senior partner at the law firm that handled the Sterling family estate, and one of Lily's father’s oldest friends. His face was a mask of cold fury.
"I don't think a single person in this room believes that video is doctored, Victoria," Arthur said, his voice cutting through the clamor. He stepped between Victoria and Lily, forming a protective barrier. He looked down at the bright red handprint still blooming on the twelve-year-old’s cheek. His jaw tightened.
Just then, the heavy oak doors of the ballroom swung open. Two uniformed police officers stepped inside, looking bewildered by the tense atmosphere.
"We received a call about a grand larceny?" the older officer asked, his hand resting cautiously on his belt. "A stolen diamond necklace?"
"There is no stolen necklace, Officer," Arthur Vance said smoothly, picking up the glittering jewelry from the polished hardwood floor and holding it up for them to see. "However, there is clear video evidence of a false police report, attempted fraud, and the physical assault of a minor."
Victoria lunged forward, her face twisted in desperation. "Arthur, please, you don't understand—she’s out of control! I was trying to teach her a lesson!"
"The only lesson you've taught anyone tonight, Victoria, is exactly who you are," Arthur replied coldly. He gestured toward the officers. "I believe you gentlemen have some questions for Mrs. Sterling. And I will be pressing charges on behalf of my client."
As the officers approached Victoria to read her her rights, the adrenaline that had kept Lily standing suddenly evaporated. Her knees buckled. Before she could hit the floor, Arthur caught her, pulling her into a gentle, fatherly hug.

"I've got you, Lily," he whispered fiercely. "I've got you. It's over."
Up in the security booth, Marcus looked down at the scene and let out a long exhale, quietly powering down the monitors. The truth was finally out in the open.
