Chapter 1 - The Ash and The Echo.

The dining room fell into a suffocating silence as Grant lifted his champagne glass beneath the crystal chandelier.

The room had been full of laughter only seconds earlier, but every nearby conversation died when he slipped an arm around Savannah's waist.

Savannah stood beside him in a pale gold gown, one hand resting over her pregnancy and the other sparkling beneath a diamond bracelet.

Across the table, Vivian watched without moving, her dark blue evening gown perfectly still against the white linen.

Grant had spent the entire gala behaving as if the room belonged to him.

Now he wanted everyone to witness one more victory.

"Savannah is carrying my child."

Several guests turned toward Vivian with expressions caught between embarrassment and curiosity.

Grant smiled as if he expected her to break.

Vivian calmly placed her glass on the table.

"Just you wait."

Grant's smile sharpened.

"For what?"

Vivian looked toward the ballroom entrance.

"The Feds are here."

A few guests laughed nervously because they assumed it was a bitter joke.

Grant did not laugh.

His eyes moved toward the doors, then back to Vivian, and for the first time his confidence cracked.

Savannah followed his gaze and closed her fingers around the bracelet.

Vivian knew every curve of that bracelet because it had belonged to her mother.

She had last seen it locked inside a private safe two weeks earlier.

Grant had told her the safe had been moved during a renovation.

He had also told her Savannah was only a consultant.

The ballroom doors opened.

Attorney Daniel Mercer entered carrying a black legal folder stamped with a red court seal.

Two Federal Marshals followed him at a measured pace.

The large screens above the stage flickered for a moment as the gala presentation system reset.

Grant lowered his glass.

"Vivian, what did you do?"

She did not answer him.

Daniel stopped near the head table and spoke quietly to one of the Marshals.

Savannah stepped back.

Vivian lifted one hand toward her wrist.

"Check that diamond bracelet."

Savannah looked at Grant before she looked at anyone else.

That single glance told Vivian more than any speech could have.

One Marshal approached Savannah and asked her to keep her wrist visible.

The other moved toward Grant.

Grant's face changed as both officers drew closer.

"This is ridiculous."

His voice had lost its force.

Daniel opened the black folder.

"It is not about one bracelet, Grant."

Grant stared at the red seal.

Vivian expected anger, but what appeared in his face was recognition.

That frightened her more.

The Marshals gave Grant clear instructions and secured his wrists while nearby guests backed away from the table.

Savannah stood frozen, suddenly looking less like a rival than someone who had discovered she was trapped inside another person's plan.

The bracelet was documented and placed in an evidence pouch.

Before it disappeared from view, Vivian saw the tiny scratch near the clasp where her mother had once dropped it against a marble sink.

"This diamond bracelet is mine."

Grant looked at Vivian as he was escorted away.

"You have no idea what you just opened."

Vivian held his stare.

"I think I finally do."

Daniel touched her elbow after Grant disappeared through the doors.

"No, Vivian."

May you like

He closed the folder.

"You only opened the first door."
