Chapter 9 - The Ballroom Screens.
The single letter "P" could have meant anyone, but Vivian immediately thought of Elaine Porter.
Daniel warned her not to decide guilt from an initial.
Vivian agreed, but she also wrote the letter on a blank page and circled it.
After weeks of being manipulated by other people's assumptions, she wanted every suspicion visible and every conclusion delayed until evidence earned it.
Instead, investigators returned to the hotel's damaged video system.
The camera failure had not been accidental.
Someone used the projection booth to upload a program that overwrote selected corridor footage while leaving most of the network active.
Security video showed Miles entering the projection area at 8:21 p.m. and leaving eighteen minutes later with the second black folder.
Then technicians discovered a separate diagnostic recording created by the ballroom's giant presentation screens.
For twelve seconds during the flicker, the system captured a mirrored image from the projection booth.
Miles stood beside a woman wearing a silver scarf.
Vivian recognized the scarf immediately.
Elaine had worn it at the foundation reception.
The woman handed Miles a flat black object that looked exactly like the duplicate legal folder.
Vivian called Elaine.
"You found the footage," Elaine said.
"Why were you with Miles?"
Elaine asked Vivian and Daniel to meet her at the foundation archive.
Investigators waited outside while they entered.
Elaine placed the silver scarf on a table before either of them spoke.
"I gave Miles the folder."
Daniel demanded an explanation.
Elaine removed a duplicate red court seal from an archive box.
"Vivian's father told me to create it before he died."
The false folder was bait.
Vivian's father believed someone inside Grant's network was monitoring legal actions around the trust.
He instructed Elaine to prepare a harmless folder with a tracking tag and use it only if the trust came under attack.
Months later, Miles secretly contacted Elaine and said he wanted out of Grant's operation.
Elaine gave him the bait folder so she could track where Grant's people carried it.
The tag stopped transmitting at Lake Harrow.
"So Miles was helping you?"
Vivian asked.
Elaine shook her head.
"Sometimes he was helping me, and sometimes he was helping himself."
Vivian asked why Elaine had hidden the plan.
Elaine produced a sealed letter from Vivian's father.
He had written that no single person should possess the entire investigation.
Then Elaine placed another paper beside it.
It was a list of people he considered potentially compromised.
Grant was first.
Miles was second.
Richard Vale was third.
Daniel Mercer was fourth.
Vivian looked at Daniel.
He did not appear shocked.
"You knew."
Daniel nodded.
Years earlier, a confidential trust draft had leaked from his law office shortly after he received it.
Vivian's father suspected Daniel because only a small group had access.
Daniel investigated internally but never found the source.
"Why didn't you tell me?"
Vivian asked.
"Because suspicion was not proof."
Vivian almost laughed at the irony.
Her entire marriage had been built on that same gap.
Before she could respond, investigators called from the hotel.
Restored footage showed Miles entering a service stairwell at 8:45 with the black folder.
One minute later, he emerged without it.
