Chapter 2 - The Bracelet With No Past.

By midnight, the ballroom had emptied, but the scandal had already escaped into the city.

Guests who had promised discretion were posting photographs, and every image seemed to show Grant at the worst possible moment.

Vivian ignored her phone as Daniel led her into a private conference room on the hotel's second floor.

The diamond bracelet rested inside an evidence pouch between them.

Savannah was speaking with investigators in another room.

Grant had been taken for processing, yet Daniel still had not explained why Federal Marshals had become involved.

Vivian folded her arms.

"You said this was bigger than the bracelet."

Daniel nodded.

"It is."

He slid a photocopy from the black folder.

It showed a large transfer from Vivian's family charitable trust into a consulting company she had never heard of.

Her signature appeared at the bottom.

"I never signed this."

Daniel placed three more transfers beside it.

Each carried the same perfect signature.

Each had been approved on a day when Vivian was traveling or appearing at a public event.

Someone had not merely copied her name.

Someone had built a paper trail around her schedule.

Grant had become increasingly involved in the foundation after Vivian's father died.

He offered to modernize accounting, introduced financial consultants, and persuaded Vivian to let his team handle routine filings.

She had accepted his help because they had been married for seven years.

Now every convenience looked different.

"Why arrest Grant if the documents point to me?"

Daniel looked at the evidence pouch.

"Because of the bracelet."

Months earlier, the bracelet had been listed as collateral for a private loan taken through one of the same consulting companies.

The lender photographed it and recorded the certification number of each diamond.

Later, the lender received a replacement bracelet that looked almost identical.

"So the real bracelet moved through Grant's network?"

Vivian asked.

"Yes."

"Then why would he put it on Savannah in public?"

Daniel had no satisfying answer.

Grant was arrogant, but he was rarely careless with money.

A hotel security officer entered with an envelope found beneath Grant's chair.

Vivian's name was handwritten across the front.

Inside was a photograph of Vivian opening the private safe in her home.

The picture had been taken from behind a partially open door.

On the back were four words in block lettering.

"She knows where it is."

Vivian stared at the angle of the photograph.

Only family, staff, or a trusted guest could have stood there without attracting attention.

"Who took this?"

"We don't know yet."

Her phone suddenly vibrated on the table.

The caller identification showed Savannah's name even though Savannah was still downstairs with investigators.

Vivian answered.

No one spoke for several seconds.

Then a man's voice whispered through the line.

"Ask Savannah who gave her the bracelet."

The call ended.

Daniel reached for his phone to alert investigators.

Vivian stopped him with one question.

"What if Grant didn't give it to her?"

Daniel looked toward the evidence pouch.

Vivian felt the first certainty of the night begin to dissolve.

May you like

If the bracelet had been placed on Savannah by someone else, then the gala had not simply exposed Grant's secret.

It had activated a plan that had been waiting for all of them.
