Chapter 14 - The Last Bidder.
The antique travel trunk had been delivered to a private storage warehouse the morning after the gala.
Investigators opened the unit with Savannah present.
The trunk sat beneath a gray protective sheet, its brass locks untouched.
Savannah recognized a scratch near one handle because Grant had pointed it out at the gala while joking that the trunk had survived more scandals than most families.
The memory made her realize how relaxed he had been while standing beside the very object meant to carry his evidence away.
A forensic technician photographed every surface before lifting the lid.
Old books and decorative silver filled the top compartment.
Beneath a false bottom lay the missing black legal folder.
Savannah closed her eyes in relief.
Vivian did not.
She asked the technician to check the lining, hinges, and false bottom before anyone removed a single document.
After everything they had uncovered, she refused to let one dramatic discovery become another shortcut to the wrong conclusion.
By then she knew that finding evidence and understanding evidence were different things.
The folder contained bank statements, shell-company registrations, messages between Grant and Miles, and a handwritten ledger in Miles's block printing.
The ledger recorded payments, security changes, forged-document requests, and names.
Grant appeared repeatedly beside approvals.
Richard appeared beside board payments.
Caroline appeared only beside early legal research.
Elaine was labeled "watching us."
Daniel's name appeared beside the leaked trust draft with a question mark.
A final section titled "Gala Exit" described Miles's plan to hand the archive to Daniel and leave the country before Grant could stop him.
"He wasn't escaping the investigation," Vivian said.
"He was escaping Grant."
Beneath the ledger lay a small voice recorder.
Its final file had been created in Grant's dressing room two hours before the gala.
Miles told Grant he was finished.
Grant replied that Miles would never separate himself from the forged transfers.
Miles said he had copied everything.
Grant answered calmly.
"Then I guess we find out which of us gets believed."
That sentence explained the strategy more clearly than a confession.
Grant had created contradictory documents, divided witnesses, and overlapping lies until truth looked like just another version of events.
The recording ended with Miles saying he placed one backup "where the diamonds will talk."
The memory card in Vivian's bracelet had been his insurance.
Yet Daniel warned that the ledger still contained a problem.
Several entries were written in a different ink.
One claimed Vivian had personally approved a transfer during a meeting at Lake Harrow.
Vivian had never visited the property until investigators searched it.
A forensic examiner confirmed that someone other than Miles added the questionable entries later.
Samples from Grant, Richard, Caroline, Elaine, Savannah, and Daniel did not match the disguised block writing.
Vivian remembered the notes on the surveillance photographs.
"Who haven't we tested?"
Daniel had the answer.
Paige Arden, Miles's cousin and Daniel's former senior paralegal, had access to the leaked trust draft.
Investigators discovered she returned to the city three days before the gala.
Her hotel room was empty.
No signs suggested danger or a struggle.
She had checked out early and left a single note addressed to Vivian.
"Ask Grant why he never wanted Miles arrested."
Savannah read the sentence aloud.
Vivian looked at the ledger.
If Grant truly wanted Miles blamed, keeping Miles free seemed like a mistake.
