Chapter 10 - The Trust Clause.
Richard Vale denied meeting Miles until investigators showed him the stairwell access record.
Then his story changed.
He admitted seeing Miles for less than a minute on gala night.
Miles handed him the black folder and told him to get it to Vivian if anything happened.
Richard never did.
He later admitted that he stood in the stairwell for nearly thirty seconds with the folder in his hands, knowing it might contain the truth and also knowing it could end his career.
That hesitation was all Grant needed.
Grant confronted him minutes later and threatened to expose payments Richard had accepted from consulting companies.
Richard surrendered the folder.
That confession explained how Grant recovered Miles's evidence, but not why Grant had been desperate enough to build the scheme in the first place.
Elaine opened the family trust documents.
An older version contained a marital management clause that could give Grant temporary authority if Vivian were found unable to manage the foundation.
Vivian's father quietly amended that clause six weeks before his death.
The new version replaced spousal authority with an independent three-person committee.
"Grant needed the amendment invalidated," Daniel said.
Elaine revealed the signed original was missing from the foundation archive.
Vivian remembered a phrase her father repeated whenever discussing valuables.
"The value is never in the box."
Her mother had been a pianist, and after her death Vivian's father refused to move the old sheet music stored inside the family piano bench.
Vivian suddenly understood.
They returned to her house.
Beneath pages of Chopin and Debussy lay a sealed legal envelope.
Inside was the original trust amendment, properly witnessed and dated.
A handwritten memorandum documented her father's concerns about Grant.
Savannah arrived under escort and read the memorandum.
One paragraph described Grant's intention to use a romantic relationship outside the marriage as evidence that Vivian was emotional and unpredictable.
Savannah lowered the page.
"I wasn't just the affair."
Vivian said nothing.
"I was evidence."
Grant had encouraged public photographs with Savannah, asked her to save messages, and questioned her about Vivian's reactions after arguments.
He had been building a record that made Vivian look jealous and unstable.
Savannah then remembered that Grant had asked her to sign several digital documents he described as insurance and apartment paperwork.
Daniel found copies in her email.
One was a declaration claiming Savannah personally witnessed Vivian threatening Grant at a private dinner.
Another said she saw Vivian remove financial records from the foundation office.
Both statements were false.
Savannah's electronic signature was genuine.
"I helped him build the case," she whispered.
Vivian answered carefully.
"You signed what he hid inside other papers."
Savannah shook her head.
"That doesn't erase it."
Daniel's phone buzzed.
Grant had requested an emergency meeting with prosecutors.
He claimed Miles designed the entire scheme and offered to identify every shell company in exchange for consideration.
Savannah's phone vibrated at the same moment.
An unknown sender had written, "Grant will trade you first."
Vivian watched Savannah read the message and saw panic begin to return.
"No," Vivian said.
"That is what they want."
Savannah looked up.

"From now on, we compare everything."
