Chapter 4 - After The Applause.

By morning, Grant's arrest had become the story everyone claimed they were not following.
Reporters waited outside the hotel, and the foundation board demanded an emergency meeting before breakfast.
Vivian's phone filled with messages from donors, reporters, distant relatives, and people who had ignored her for years.
Some offered sympathy, while others asked questions so carefully worded that she could hear suspicion beneath every sentence.
Vivian sat in the back of Daniel's car and replayed Grant's reaction to the red court seal.
He had not looked surprised by an accusation.
He had looked as if he recognized a signal.
At the foundation office, six board members waited around the walnut conference table.
Elaine Porter, her father's oldest friend on the board, pushed a packet toward Vivian.
"Our accounts are frozen pending review."
The packet contained seven suspicious transfers, not four.
Every transaction carried Vivian's signature.
Money had moved from the charitable trust through consulting companies and into accounts connected to luxury properties.
One property was registered to Grant.
Another was registered to Vivian.
"I have never owned this apartment."
Richard Vale, another board member, leaned back in his chair.
"The records say otherwise."
Vivian saw the trap.
Someone had not only moved money.
Someone had created enough documentation to make her look like a willing partner.
Richard proposed that Vivian step down until the review ended.
"I will cooperate with every investigation," Vivian said.
"I will not resign because someone forged my name."
Daniel told the board that the digital certificates attached to the transfers could reveal which devices produced them.
Richard's confidence faded for only a second, but Vivian noticed.
After the meeting, Elaine locked the conference-room door and removed an old leather ledger from a drawer.
"Your father gave me this before he died."
The pages listed family assets, including the certification numbers of the diamonds in Vivian's mother's bracelet.
Near the back, Vivian found a note beside Grant's name.
"He asks too many questions about collateral rules."
Another note appeared three months later.
"If anything happens to me, check the Mercer file."
Vivian looked at Daniel.
He had gone very still.
"What Mercer file?"
Daniel finally admitted that Vivian's father had asked him to review Grant's access to the family trust two weeks before his death.
"You never told me."
"He asked for confidentiality until we had proof."
"What did you find?"
Daniel looked away.
"I never finished the review."
Vivian heard something guarded in his answer, but his phone rang before she could press him.
Grant had been released pending further proceedings.
At almost the same time, Miles Arden had used his passport at the airport.
Elaine asked where he was flying.
Daniel turned the screen toward them.
Miles had checked in, passed security, and never boarded the plane.
His luggage traveled without him.
Airport security inspected the abandoned bag.
Inside they found a second black legal folder bearing a red court seal.
The folder contained no evidence, no documents, and no tracking device.
It was completely empty.
Vivian looked at Daniel.
"Someone wanted us to know there were two folders."
Daniel nodded.
"Or someone wanted us looking at the wrong one."
Elaine's face lost color.
May you like
Vivian realized her father's old warning had not been about Grant alone.
Someone inside the foundation had known this day might come.
