The false vault authorization was convincing enough to survive an ordinary review.
Daniel sent it to a document examiner, who found pressure patterns consistent with a mechanical signing device.
Vivian immediately remembered the expensive digital pen system Grant had purchased for the foundation.
He called it a convenience for documents that needed signatures while people were traveling.
Investigators had not found the device in Grant's office.
Vivian remembered Grant once insisting that the device never leave his control because it could reproduce authorized signatures for urgent filings.
At the time, she had considered that caution responsible.
Now it sounded like preparation.
Elaine called while Vivian and Daniel were still at Harbor Registry.
"I know you saw the photograph."
Vivian put the call on speaker.
"Why were you meeting Grant and Miles outside this building?"
Elaine admitted that Vivian's father had asked her to participate in a quiet test.
She pretended to support Grant's trust-restructuring ideas so Grant would explain how much control he wanted.
"Were you helping my father or helping Grant?"
"Both, for a while."
Elaine confessed that she initially supported Grant's financial modernization plans and introduced him to several consultants.
When unusual transfers appeared, she warned Vivian's father.
After his death, however, Elaine received a polite message containing private emails, details of her home alarm, and the address of her daughter.
No direct threat appeared in the message.
None was necessary.
At the bottom was a photograph of Vivian's father's signet ring.
Vivian checked the date.
The message had been sent before the ring disappeared from her safe.
"Someone removed it, photographed it, returned it, then took it again later."
The access had been happening for months.
Vivian thought about the temporary security code bearing Savannah's name.
Only three administrator accounts could create such codes.
Grant controlled one.
Miles controlled another.
Investigators called before Elaine could say more.
They had found Miles's car in an airport garage.
Inside the trunk were the missing digital signing device and a box used by the jeweler who made the bracelet replica.
On the passenger seat lay Savannah's prenatal appointment card.
The glove compartment contained a photograph of Savannah leaving a medical office.
On the back, the same block handwriting read, "She believes everything."
Vivian felt the mystery shift.
Miles had been watching Savannah just as someone had watched Vivian.
Daniel asked whether Miles was Grant's accomplice or a man gathering insurance against Grant.
Vivian could not tell anymore.
Then the investigator mentioned one more item from the car.
A receipt showed that Miles had rented a house near Lake Harrow for six months under a company name.
The rent was paid from the same consulting network linked to the foundation transfers.
Daniel requested authority to search the property.
Before the call ended, investigators ran the digital signing device.
Its memory retained a list of recently produced signatures.
Vivian's name appeared dozens of times.
So did Daniel's.
Elaine's appeared twice.
The final name surprised everyone.
It belonged to Vivian's late father.
Vivian stared at the report.
"Why would they need my father's signature after he was gone?"
Daniel did not answer.
He was looking at the date beside the final signature.
It had been generated three days before the gala.
