Chapter 1 - The Pot at the Table.

.The dining room fell into a suffocating silence.
The crystal chandelier above seemed to flicker, casting hard reflections across the half-eaten feast.
Alex Mercer stood in the kitchen doorway with one hand still wrapped around the handle of his suitcase.
He had been home for less than ten seconds.
That was long enough to see his six-year-old daughter standing on a stool beside the island.
Chloe's blonde hair had slipped loose from its ribbon, and tears streaked her cheeks.
Both of her small hands were red beneath dark berry-colored stains.
She was trying to hold a heavy steel pot against her chest.
At the formal table, Evelyn Mercer did not rise.
Her silver dress caught the light as she pointed toward the guests with the calm authority of someone who expected obedience.
"Serve my guests first."
Alex's suitcase hit the floor.
Claire turned from the sink.
She wore pale pink loungewear, and her right hand was wrapped in thick white bandages.
For one strange second, Alex could not decide which detail frightened him more.
Then Chloe's knees wobbled on the stool.
He crossed the kitchen in three fast steps.
"Let go, sweetheart."
Chloe tried to obey, but her fingers had stiffened around the pot handles.
Alex took the weight from her carefully and lowered the pot against his own body.
"Daddy, Grandma said Mommy and I don't eat until everybody else does."
No one at the dining table moved.
Eight guests stared down at their plates as though the linen might open and hide them.
Evelyn finally stood.
"She is upset because Claire has taught her to be dramatic."
Alex looked at Chloe's hands again.
Then he looked at Claire's bandages.
Something inside his face changed.
He carried the pot into the dining room.
The guests leaned back as he set it down hard in the center of the table.
Soup and roasted vegetables splashed across the white linen and tipped two crystal glasses onto their sides.
"Everyone out."
Evelyn's eyes narrowed.
"Alex, do not embarrass this family in front of my friends."
"You have five minutes."
One chair scraped backward.
Then another.
The first guest to leave was Martin Hale, the family attorney, who did not meet Evelyn's eyes as he collected his coat.
The others followed with hurried apologies that Alex did not answer.
Within two minutes, the front door had closed behind the last of them.
Evelyn remained beside the ruined table.
"You have no idea what happened here."
"That's exactly what I'm about to find out."
Claire reached him before he could move toward his mother.
Her bandaged hand closed around the sleeve of his dark suit.
Her face had gone pale.
"Alex."
He turned.
Claire looked over his shoulder toward the tiny security camera above the kitchen archway.
"The burns weren't from dishwater."
Evelyn's expression changed for the first time.
It was not anger.
It was fear.
Alex followed Claire's gaze to the camera.
"What happened?"
Claire swallowed.
"Check the recording."
Alex pulled out his phone and opened the home security application.
The kitchen feed appeared immediately.
He dragged the timeline back twenty minutes.
Nothing.
He went back an hour.
The screen turned gray.
A message appeared beneath the empty timeline.
RECORDING UNAVAILABLE.
Alex tried again.
The same message returned.
Then a smaller line appeared at the bottom of the screen.
Footage deleted by administrator at 6:42 p.m.
Alex slowly lifted his eyes from the phone.
Only three people had administrator access.
He was one of them.
Claire was another.
The third was Evelyn.
Across the room, his mother reached for her handbag.
Alex stepped between her and the front door.
"Nobody leaves yet."
Evelyn's hand stopped in midair.

And for the first time that evening, Claire realized Alex was no longer asking what had happened.
He was asking who had tried to erase it.
